Yale expels student implicated in admissions scam

The prestigious Yale University has expelled a student whose parents paid more than a million dollars in bribes to get her in, the first such move since a huge admissions scandal erupted earlier this month. Some 50 people have been indicted so far in a scam to help children of the American elite gain entry into top US colleges. They include sports coaches who provided bogus recommendations, university administrators who manipulated test scores, and 33 parents accused of paying bribes totalling some USD 6.5 million to guarantee admission for their children. In a statement published on its website on Tuesday, Yale said it had first learnt about the scheme in mid-November, when it was approached by the Boston US Attorney's Office requesting information about head women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith. UGC bans distance learning degree programmes in agriculture

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has prohibited imparting distance degree programmes in agriculture. The decision was taken by the higher education regulator at its last meeting on the ground that a degree programme in agriculture is technical in nature as it requires practicals or laboratory courses. "The Union agriculture ministry had referred the matter to the commission, requesting it to consider prohibiting universities from offering Open and Distance Learning (ODL) degree programmes in agriculture," a senior commission official said. As per UGC Open and Distance Learning Regulations, 2017, professional programmes such as medicine, engineering, architecture, nursing, dental, pharmacy and physiotherapy, are not permitted to be offered in distance mode. "To protect the interest of the students already enrolled to the agriculture degree programme, the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) has been requested for hand-holding of such higher education institutions. ...

JNU students continue hunger strike against introduction of MBA course

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on Tuesday continued their indefinite hunger strike for the eighth day against the introduction of expensive MBA course in the varsity."We have been sitting on hunger strike; this is the eighth day of our strike against many issues but primarily against the management course which will be inducted from this academic session," Sarika Chaudhary, Vice president Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) said."The course has the highest ever fee structure that is Rs 12 lakh which is higher than any private college. The hunger strike by JNU students entered its eighth day today even as Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, who had on Monday alleged that some students forcibly entered his house and confined his wife, said he had "forgiven" them and would not file a complaint with the police. The US Education Department has opened investigations into eight universities tied to a major admissions scam, Politico has reported, citing people close to the matter.
