Eleven students have been on an indefinite hunger strike since Tuesday against issues like the online entrance exams to be held for the first time by the varsity. A 35-year-old cleaner was killed and two students of a private school were injured when their bus brushed barricades erected for the Metro rail construction work in Goregaon on the Western Express Highway, police said Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Umesh Gurav, a police official said. The injured students are in the age group of 12 to 14 years. The bus driver, identified as Ramjit Gaud, 54, was arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving by Vanrai police, he said.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra has warned its students against "gate crashing" weddings near its premises. "It has been reported that some of the students have been going to attend weddings in the city without having invitation. This is not only unethical and immoral but also uncalled for," a letter sent to hostel inmates by the Chief Warden said. Sources in the institute said that off late there have been complaints that students have been gate crashing weddings to skip meals in the mess which is why this directive was issued. The letter directed students to desist from indulging in such type of "uncivilised activities" which also brings a bad name to the institution. The letter warned students of disciplinary action if they are found doing so. Three Class 12 students drowned at the Silver Beach here Tuesday evening, police said. The students were enjoying at the beach after their exams ended. They were swept away by strong waves. Their bodies were later found, the police said. The deceased have been identified as Srihari, Dhanush and Vignesh, they said. Besides one more person was swept away at the beach, but his body is yet to be found, police added.

Eleven students, including Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union vice president Sarika Chaudhary, have gone on a hunger strike to protest against the varsity's decision to hold online entrance exams and several other issues. The JNU said the registration for the online entrance exams is progressing rapidly with thousands of students registering within a few days of the portal being made public. Demanding the vice-chancellor to take cognisance of the issues being raised by them, the students, including the JNUSU vice-president and former JNUSU president Geeta Kumari, started their indefinite hunger strike Tuesday. The Mumbai University Tuesday announced rescheduling of 76 exam papers due to overlapping of Lok Sabha poll dates in the Mumbai region. The last two phases of Lok Sabha polls in the state will be held on April 23 and 29, and exams scheduled on and around these dates have been postponed to avoid inconvenience to students, an MU statement said. These comprise 30 papers of Commerce and Management, 17 Science and Technology papers as well as 29 papers of Interdisciplinary faculty. Fresh dates for the examinations will be announced on the varsity's portal, the statement added. "Dates of some examinations are clashing with the Lok Sabha election dates, so some examination dates are postponed and some are rescheduled. The university has tried to make minimum changes. Students should take note of the changes," Dr Vinod Patil, Director, Examination and Evaluation Board said.
A clerk of the Education Department here and a patwari (village-level revenue officer) posted in Sriganganagar district were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly taking bribes of Rs 14,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively, officials said. The accused clerk, Natwar Lal Pareek, posted at district education officer (Middle School) had demanded bribe of Rs 14,000 from a teacher who was awaited posting order, an Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. In another case, the accused patwari, Ajay Kumar, had demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 from complainant Surendra Kumar of Anupgarh tehsil in Sriganganagar district for settling a land mutation case. The deal was settled at Rs 2,000, ACB ASP Rajendra Dhindharia said. A case was registered against the accused under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, he added.

Four members of staff at an Oslo primary school were slightly hurt when a pupil threatened an employee with a knife, Norwegian police said Tuesday. Police sent several patrols to the school in the Brynseng district after reports of "violence and a threatening situation", the force said on Twitter. A pupil at the school, which has students between six and 13 years old, was threatening a staff member with a bread knife, Norway's NTB news agency reported. Police said they overpowered the boy, who was described in Norwegian media reports as very young. None of those hurt were stabbed with the knife, but suffered bites or were stabbed with a fork by the boy, Verdens Gang newspaper reported. All were staff at the school, said police. The Madhya Pradesh High Court Tuesday, in an interim order, stayed the state government's ordinance increasing reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) category to 27 per cent from the earlier 14 per cent. The Congress government in the state had issued an ordinance on March 8 increasing the reservation in the OBC category to 27 per cent. A division bench of justices RS Jha and Sanjay Dwivedi Tuesday stayed the state government ordinance which increased the percentage of reservation for OBCs. Petitioners Ashita Dubey, Richa Pandey and Suman, all MBBS students who had appeared for NEET 2019 for admissions to post graduate medical courses, had challenged the state government's ordinance on grounds that it violated provisions of Article 16(4) of the Constitution, their counsel Aditya Sanghi said. The Delhi High Court has taken note of the "dearth" of special education teachers in government schools here and said that despite repeated efforts, the vacancies have not been filled. Special education programs are designed for those students who are mentally, physically, socially or emotionally delayed and special educators are hired to meet the appropriate needs of each such child. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and A K Chawla said, "It has been pointed out that there are large number of vacancies of special education teachers and despite repeated efforts, these are not being filled. There is a dearth of special education teachers in the schools in Delhi." The court's observation came while dismissing an appeal by the Delhi government challenging the February 2017 order of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) asking it to consider the candidature of an applicant for the post of special educator and process the appointment, if found qualified and eligible.
