Thirty girl students of a government school in Delhi fell ill after consuming mid-day meal that allegedly had a dead lizard in it, police said. The students were rushed to a hospital and later discharged. "About 30 students were taken ill due to food poisoning after consuming mid-day meal. They were admitted to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital," a senior police official said. "The vice-principal of the school has alleged that there was a dead lizard in the food," he added. On the basis of the complaint, the police registered a case and a probe was initiated, the official said. According to the hospital authorities, the students of senior secondary school in Narela's Bankner complained of abdominal pain after consuming the food. They were discharged after receiving treatment. The Uttarakhand High Court today issued a slew of directions to the state government to ensure that proper facilities are provided in schools to children with special needs A division bench of justices Rajiv Sharma and Lokpal Singh passed the order after taking cognizance of a letter written by one Kamal Gupta four years ago highlighting the difficulties faced by children with special needs in pursuing education It directed that all the government, aided and non-aided schools of the state must ensure washrooms, transportation system and barrier free movement for children with special needs. "The state government is directed to appoint special educators in all the schools for children with special needs within a period of six months," the bench said. The court has also directed the government to give a scholarship of Rs 1,000 per month to these students and to look after all the children with special needs whose parents are not able to take care of them. The Goa Cabinet today approved Information Technology policy 2018 which focuses on reverse migration and creation of around 10,000 jobs in the next five years. The IT policy would be formally unveiled by Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad here on July 15, State IT Minister Rohan Khaunte said. The Mangalore University has withdrawn a chapter 'Maguvina Tandhe' (father of a child) from its official Kannada language textbook 'Nudi Noopura' prescribed for third semester BCom students after it kicked up a row. The lesson was based on a story written by late Mattara Vittal Hegde. Some section of students and professors alleged that the lesson portrayed and justified extramartial and illicit relationships as normal. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will come up with a special centre for the study of the country's north east region, the varsity's vice-chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar said today. The modalities of the courses to be offered by the centre will be worked out, a professor said. Nearly 23 per cent of children between the ages of 15 and 18 years in urban Delhi-NCR region are dropouts while 5 per cent of the same age group has never been enrolled in any school, according to a report by a leading NGO. The total number of children in the state in the age group of 15-18 years was 13,56,031 in the Delhi-NCR region, according to the report by the Child Rights and You (CRY) quoting data from 2011 census. About 24 per cent of children in rural Delhi-NCR region in the age group of 15-18 years have dropped out of school while 5 per cent of the same age group has never been to any school. The report that was launched today showed that just 19.7 per cent of schools in Delhi NCR region provide complete school education and 35.8 per cent of the schools are offering secondary education. "About 1,338 posts of teachers lie vacant out of 15,110 seats in the Delhi-NCR region," the report said. About 40.47 per cent children in the same age group in urban India and 28.87 per cent .
The Delhi High Court today asked the AAP government to explain the reasons for non-utilisation of the funds disbursed by the Centre for providing sanitary napkins and creating awareness about menstrual hygiene among school students. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar sought the Delhi government's stand on the issue after an application was moved stating that according to information received under the Right To Information (RTI), Rs 27 lakh disbursed by the Centre for providing hygiene products, has not been used. The court asked the Delhi government to indicate its stand before the next date of hearing on October 16. During the brief hearing, Delhi government's additional standing counsel Sanjoy Ghosh told the bench that the Centre disbursed the funds for two pilot projects to provide the hygiene products for Rs 6 per pack. At least 26 students in a government school in Narela fell ill allegedly after consuming mid-day meal.The Haryana police said that prima facie they fell ill after they ate the food provided by the school authorities. Investigations are underway.It is alleged that a dead lizard was the reason of illness.Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said, "The kitchen staff have been called for a meeting which will be led by the education department. The Delhi High Court today asked the city government to explain the reasons and circumstances behind its proposal to install over 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras inside classrooms in state-run schools. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said while there may be a security aspect behind the proposal, such a move "might stifle initiative" of the children in the classroom. Observing that children have a right to privacy, the court wondered as to how much of it would apply to a classroom. It also said in some cases monitoring and scrutinising of the teaching imparted may be required. A day after the Jadavpur University (JU) authorities decided to reintroduce admission tests in the Arts faculty ending the impasse there, the officials concerned held a meeting today and announced dates for entrance examinations to be held later this month. The Dean of the Arts faculty Prof Subhasis Biswas and members of the Admission Committee discussed modalities of the admission tests as per yesterday's resolution of the Executive Council (EC), the highest decision making body of the JU. Entrance tests to the six arts subjects in undergraduate courses will be held on different dates from July 21 to July 25, Biswas said after the meeting. He told reporters that students would be admitted in the six subjects based on the 50:50 formula - equal weightage on marks obtained in admission tests and in board examination.
