Direct interference of govts will increase if Higher Education commission is set up: DUTA

The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) today condemned the government's plan to replace the apex education regulator UGC with a higher education commission and said it will result in an increased direct interference by the governments. It is, however, not clear why this overhaul is necessary and how it will address the needs of higher education in a better way, the body said. "The present structure is being completely replaced without providing a detailed study of its founding goals, achievements, its shortcomings and their possible reasons and corrective measures taken or required to improve the health of the UGC. Over 26,000 takes admission in DU colleges till now

Delhi University's admissions tally crossed the 25,000 mark on the last day of admissions today after the second cut-off lists were released, varsity officials said. As many as 4,003 admissions took place today while 150 students cancelled their admissions, they added. Over 10,000 admissions took place in the last two days. Varsity officials said that as many as 26,291 admissions out of the 56,000 seats in the varsity. As many as 3,203 students have cancelled their admissions so far. Many prominent colleges in the university had closed admissions after their seats were filled on the basis of the first cut-off lists announced on June 19. The second cut-off lists were released on June 24 and many colleges did not announce their second cut-offs for many courses. The varsity threw open its admission portal for aspirants of various undergraduate courses on May 15. The registration for these courses ended on June 7. JU impasse over admission tests ends after 44 hours

The impasse over admission tests to six humanities streams at Jadavpur University ended today, as its Executive Council declared that they will be held "at the earliest". The announcement prompted the agitating Arts Faculty Students' Union to withdraw the gherao of the vice-chancellor and other EC members, after 44 hours. The EC also condemned the "wrongful confinement" of the vice-chancellor and other EC members, since Monday evening. Pro-VC Pradip Ghosh told reporters at the university that an admission committee, comprising head of departments of the six humanities streams, "will decide on the modalities of holding the admission tests and decide on the date at the earliest". Soon after the announcement, the impasse ended, as the agitating students made way for VC Suranjan Das and other EC members to leave the campus at around 4 pm, a JU Teachers' Association (JUTA) member said. Sisodia, Finnish envoy meet teachers returned from Finland after receiving training

Ambassador of Finland to India Nina Vaskunlahti and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today interacted with a group of heads of government schools and teacher educators who returned from Finland after getting training. According to the Delhi government, two groups of 30 each comprising heads of schools, officers of Directorate of Education (DoE) and teachers had visited Finland from March 4 to 10 and March 11 to 17. Centre to scrap UGC, bring in Higher Education Commission

The government is set to replace the apex higher education regulator University Grants Commission (UGC) with a higher education commission by repealing the UGC Act, 1951. "Under the leadership of PM @narendramodi has embarked on a process of reforms of the regulatory agencies for better administration of the HE sector (sic). In a landmark decision, a draft Act for repeal of #UGC & setting up #HECI (Higher Education Commission of India) has been prepared," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted. "The draft Act is in accordance with the commitment of govt for reforming the regulatory systems that provide more autonomy to HE institutes to promote excellence & facilitate holistic growth of the education system," he added. JU Executive Council condemns "wrongful confinement" of VC

The Executive Council of Jadavpur University today condemned the "wrongful confinement" of the vice-chancellor and EC members by a section of students, especially from the arts faculty. The varsity decided to conduct admission tests for six humanities' subjects at the earliest, the postponement of which had triggered the agitation by members of the Arts Faculty Students Union (AFSU). "The Executive Council unanimously condemned the wrongful confinement of the EC members from June 25 till date by a section of student, especially from the arts faculty," Pro-VC Pradip Ghosh said. Ghosh told reporters at the university that an admission committee, formed by the EC, will decide on the modalities of holding the admission tests and decide on the date. Hitachi opens training centre in Kolkata

Johnson Controls - Hitachi Air Conditioning India Limited today inaugurated its fourth state-of-the-art Engineering Excellence Center (EEC) in the city, a company statement said. The centre aims to skill and generate manpower and in the industry and help create employability in the country's eastern states, it said. The three other training centers are in Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai, the statement said. The centre here, a first of its kind for vocational HVAC training for the eastern market, is spread over 8400 sq ft and furnished with exclusive hands-on training facilities through practical labs for room AC, variable refrigerant flow-based AC, packaged AC, control panels and brazing. The centre's capacity is 50 seats in two class rooms and has the capacity to train 170 people at a time.

Pb CM directs finance department to immediately release Rs 80 cr for school education dept

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today directed the Finance Department to immediately release Rs 80 crore for school education, while reiterating his willingness to slash the budget of other departments to make funds available for reforming the education sector. Chairing a meeting of an expert group of teachers at his official residence here, he said that paucity of funds would not be allowed to come in the way of overhauling the state's education system, a spokesperson said. The group comprises principals and administrators of schools whose students had performed well in the board exams. The chief minister had convened the meeting to seek their suggestions on uplifting the standards of school education in Punjab. Narcissistic adolescents may perform better at school, a new research has claimed.According to the researchers from Queen's University Belfast, the growing rate of narcissism in society could be linked with school achievement.Researcher Kostas Papageorgiou and colleagues had discovered that adolescents who score high on certain aspects of subclinical narcissism may be more mentally tough and can perform better at school.In the study, 340 adolescent students, taking part in the Multi-Cohort Investigation into Learning and Educational Success study (MILES), were recruited from three different Italian high schools in the Milan Province.
