'Telugu compulsorily in all schools in Telangana'
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Tuesday made it mandatory to teach Telugu as a compulsory subject in all the public and private schools of the state for the academic year 2018-2019."We decided to make Telugu a compulsory subject as it is our responsibility to respect our mother tongue and our culture. Studying in English medium schools is becoming a must to acquire good education. Shooting at Maryland high school: officials
A shooting erupted at a high school in the eastern US state of Maryland today, but the event was quickly "contained," officials said. There were no immediate official reports of casualties in the shooting at Great Mills High School, located about a 90-minute drive southeast of the US capital Washington. St Mary's County Public Schools said on its website that the school was on lockdown and the incident had been "contained" but provided no further details. It said law enforcement was on the scene. "It happened really quickly, right after school started" after 8:00 am (1200 GMT), Jonathan Freese, a student at the school, told CNN. "The police came and responded really quickly," Freese said. "They had a lot of officers respond." "Right now, the police are going through classrooms," he said. "Soon we are going to be escorted from the school." The Great Mills incident comes about five weeks after a shooting at a Florida high school left 14 students and three adult staff members dead.
GUKT, Basar, NFTDC sign MoU to offer joint MTech, PhD Prog
The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Basar, today said it has entered into an MoU with Non Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre, Hyderabad to offer a joint M Tech and PhD Programme. The MoU was signed by RGUKT Basar Vice Chancellor A Ashok Kumar and NFTDCs Director, K Bala Subramanian at RGUKT Campus in Basar of Nirmal district of Telangana, RGUKT said in a press release here. The MoU entails offering a joint MTech and PhD programme, exchange of faculty and scientists in course work as well as research, submission of joint project proposals to funding agencies, sharing of necessary laboratory equipment and facilities for collaborative research projects. Under the MoU a few students of RGUKT, Basar, will be given an option of serving in NFTDC upon satisfying the eligibility criteria, it said. JNU professor arrested in sexual harassment case
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Atul Johri was today arrested for allegedly sexually harassing several women students of the institute, police said. Students and professors of the university as well as women's rights organisations had been protesting demanding Johri's arrest, after some students accused him of sexual harassment. Dependra Pathak, Chief Spokesperson, Delhi Police said Johri was arrested after three hours of questioning at the Vasant Kunj police station. The professor was produced before duty magistrate Ritu Singh. Yesterday, 54 JNU professors had demanded registration of separate FIRs on all eight sexual harassment complaints against Johri. They had also petitioned Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Milind Dumbere's office in this regard. HC warns students of jail term for defacement
The Delhi High Court today warned the students of Delhi University that they may have to go to jail if they are found defacing public property ahead of the next elections for the varsity's student union, DUSU. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said it cannot "tolerate" public property being "blatantly" defaced. "We will send you ( the candidates, who contested in the DUSU elections of 2017) to jail, if you are found indulging in defacing the public property ahead of the next DUSU election. "Defacement of public property cannot be tolerated in any manner. You all are young and you should know how to keep your city clean. Next time you won't be spared of such blatant act," the bench remarked. It also asked the candidates, who contested in the 2017 DUSU polls to evolve a mechanism for removing the existing defacements. Tripura launched an Information Technology (IT) Park with an expenditure of Rs 50 crore in April last year, but it is yet to draw any major investor, IT Minister Sudip Roy Barman said. Exam centres involved in paper leaks to be blacklisted: Tawde
Examination centres found guilty of leaking papers would be blacklisted and permanently barred from conducting exams, Maharashtra Education minister Vinod Tawde told the Legislative Council today. He was replying on frequent incidents of SSC and HSC examination paper leaks. The matter was raised by the Congress' Sanjay Dutt. "The government has taken serious note of such leaks and tough deterrent action will be taken against those involved. Guilty examination centres will be blacklisted and permanently barred from the examination centre lists," Tawde said. Speaking about the leak of the Class X History and Political Science exam paper yesterday in Kalyan, Dutt said evidence was emerging that the leak might have occurred due to a coaching class teacher in Ulhasnagar. B.Com students get compulsory question on BJP govt's policies
Lucknow University's B.Com students appearing for their final examination were asked to attempt a compulsory question pertaining to the policies of the BJP government. The first question of the Applied Economics (Indian Economic Structure) paper on March 17 asked students to explain the BJP government's schemes in brief. The question was divided into 10 parts, each carrying four marks. Seven of them were about the schemes launched by the BJP government at the Centre. The examinees were asked to explain in brief the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Digital India, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, Soil Health Card Scheme, Start-Up India, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. UP govt says won't open new engg colleges as 62pc seats vacant
The Uttar Pradesh government today ruled out opening new engineering colleges, saying a huge 62 per cent seats in existing technical institutions in the state were lying vacant. "Sixty-two per cent seats in engineering colleges are vacant and government is not going to open any new engineering college in the state," Technical Education Minister Ashutosh Tondon said during Question Hour in the Assembly. Replying to Samajwadi Party member Sanjay Garg's question on why such a large number of seats were vacant, Tondon said: "It happened because the previous government did not pay attention to infrastructure facilities and allowed opening of engineering colleges though they were not needed. "We are ensuring that quality of education is maintained. No new teachers were appointed in government engineering colleges after 2007. Maha govt to strictly enforce fee regulation law: Tawde
Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde said today that the government would take steps to ensure a firm enforcement of the fee regulation law in educational institutions. Replying to a discussion on the issue raised in the state Assembly through a Calling Attention notice by Atul Bhatkalkar (of the BJP) and others, Tawde saidat present, the legislation has no provision for redressal of parents' complaints against fee hike by schools. To tackle this, a committee has been set up to address the complaints of parents, he said. "Now, parents can complain to the committee headed by retired high court judge V G Palshikar," Tawde said. He said parents should participate in meetings of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at schools. If the PTAis strong, there will be no irregularities in schools, he said. Yoga training for primary school teachers in Sikkim
The Sikkim government is training primary school teachers in the state so that they can give lessons on basic yoga to students, an official release has said. As many as 266 primary school teachers have been given the training so far, it said. Yoga has been introduced in the curriculum in all government schools from the academic session 2016-17. To ensure that all schools have trainers from the beginning of this academic session, the training was organised in phase-wise manner for all districts in which 266 teachers were trained on the basics of yoga, the release said. The two week-long training was held by the Directorate of Primary Education under the Human Resource Development Department (HRDD) in all the districts from March 7, the Information and Public Relations (IPR) said in the release. A total of 10 'Master Trainers' were roped in to impart basics of yoga to the teachers.
