Students block railway tracks in Mumbai, demand jobs
Scores of agitated students demanding jobs in railways today blocked rail traffic, including suburban services between Matunga and Dadar stations, causing difficulties to lakhs of commuters, a Central Railway official said. The students blocked the rail track at 7 am in the morning, forcing railway to stop the suburban as well as express train in the affected section between Matunga and CSMT. Entire four lines are affected between Matunga and CSMT. Police and railway official are having talks with them, the official said. "There has been no recruitment since last four years. We are struggling from pillars to post. Over 10 students have committed suicide. We cannot let such things happen," a student who was part of the protest said. UP board students resort to 'bribery'
The fear of failure is so high among students taking the Uttar Pradesh Board examinations that some of them turned to desperate measures like attaching notes on their answer sheets.Currency notes of Rs 100, Rs 50 and Rs 500 were found in answer sheets during the checking of 12th board examination papers in Firozabad district.The teachers said, "Students, whose exams did not go well, are attaching currency notes in the examination papers to bribe us. We are giving marks only on merit. None of us are accepting the money found in the answer sheets."Another thing that came to light was that the CCTV cameras that were installed inside the examination centres were not working as their connection wires were damaged. Gupta demands extension of Delhi govt order on shutting down unrecognised schools, Sisodia assures welfare of students
BJP MLA and leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta today objected to the Aam Aadmi Party government's order to shut down unrecognised private schools by March 31 and demanded extension of the deadline. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the Delhi government would ensure that no student is left out of school. He added that the education department, under him, is currently conducting a survey to access the number of unrecognised private schools. There were heated arguments between Sisodia and Gupta on the issue when the former accused the latter of raising issue on the "behest of his friends in the BJP as most of his party colleagues run schools". HC adjourns plea on weightage marks to in-service candidates
The Madras High Court today adjourned to March 22, a petition seeking a direction to the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) to comply with the MCI rules on awarding weightage of marks to in-service candidates for service rendered in remote areas. When the petitions filed by seven in-service doctors came up, Justice R Mahadevan adjourned it to March 22 after counsel representing the Medical Council of India (MCI) took note of it. The petitioners sought a direction to the DGHS to comply with MCI's Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000, with reference to awarding the weightage marks and reserving 50 per cent seats in PG Diploma courses for eligible medical officers in government service, in All India Quota Seats, based on the NEET PG 2018 examination . The petitioners submitted that they were in-service candidates working as assistant surgeons in Tamil Nadu Medical Services and had appeared for the NEET-PG 2018 exam on January 7. Punjab govt schools get 200 more Principals
The Punjab education department has appointed nearly 200 more principals in government higher secondary schools across the state aiming to uplift the existing education standards, an official said. In December last year, the government promoted 310 lecturers as principals, the education department official said. He said that with the appointment of nearly 200 more principals, no post of principal would remain vacant. To bring transparency in the government working, all the promoted principals were given a fair chance for station selection, the official said. The Punjab government had recently announced the concept of smart schools with English medium to be run from government schools. For this purpose 217 schools were shortlisted. After bringing the concept of smart schools, to bring better qualitative education at par with private schools, the government brought changes so there would be no dearth of faculty members and principals in the all the schools, officials said.
4.20 lakh old age pensioners in Delhi, 2 lakh 'women in distress' beneficiaries: Survey
The number of senior citizens in Delhi getting old age pension rose to 4.20 lakh in the current fiscal (till December 2017), recording an increase by 8.9 per cent over the past five years, according to the latest Economic Survey of the national capital released today. The number of beneficiaries under the 'Pension to Women in Distress' increased to 2,03,631 in current fiscal from 1,76,778 in 2016-17. About 75,600 persons are provided financial assistance under the scheme Financial Assistance to Differently-Abled Persons in 2017-18 (till December 2017) and during the financial year 2016-17 it was 71,581. About 7,000 households were provided financial support under the National Family Benefit Scheme during the year 2016-17, according to the survey. The government is providing financial assistance for purchase of stationary, scholarship/meritorious scholarship to SC/ST/OBC/Minorities students studying in class 1 to 12th. Teacher held for alleged obscene behaviour
A teacher was arrested today for alleged obscene behaviour, police said. The of junior high school teacher in Madnapur area was arrested for allegedly acting obscenely in front of a 14-year-old Dalit girl, ASP Dinesh Tripathi said. After the girl informed this to her family members, they reached the school with other villagers and caught the teacher and beat him, he added. They later registered an FIR against the teacher who was arrested, the ASP said.
IIM-Indore student offered Rs 63.45 L package by foreign firm
An IIM-Indore student has been offered an annual package of Rs 63.45 lakh to work abroad, which is the highest during the final placement this year. "The package was offered by a foreign firm for a job abroad," an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) spokesman said today without disclosing the name of the candidate and the company. The highest package offered for a placement in the country stood at Rs 33.04 lakh, he said. The average annual package offered to the IIM students this year was Rs 18.17 lakh, which is 12 per cent more than the previous year. More than 200 foreign and domestic companies have shown interest in offering placements to 624 students of the IIM-I, he said. According to the spokesman, a bulk of 27 per cent offers came for placements in the finance sector, followed by 24 per cent in the consulting and strategy sector. Teachers in Odisha today threatened to boycott evaluation of matriculation (class 10) examination answer sheets alleging government apathy, even as the state government urged them to cooperate in the larger interest of the students. Teachers under the banner of All Odisha School College Teachers and Employees United Forum staged dharna outside evaluation centres including Capital High School here accusing the state government of being apathetic towards them. The agitating teachers alleged there was inordinate delay in publishing a notification on withdrawal of compulsory affidavit clause to avail grant-in-aid (GIA). The forum also urged all teachers to skip the evaluation process slated to begin tomorrow. A group of women students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University today launched a protest against "discriminatory" restrictions on them, a week after a hostel inmate was not allowed to receive food she had ordered online after the 8-pm deadline. One of the inmates of the Old Hall of Girls' Residence of the university alleged a woman student was last week not allowed to receive food she had ordered for herself after the "curfew timing". "Similarly numerous rules and regulations restrict the mobility and autonomy of adult women in our institutions of higher education," she said. Provost Dr S Azar Khursheed told PTI that after the incident a notice was issued yesterday extending the deadline. "They (the woman students) may be granted a maximum of four late nights permission (till 10 pm) in a month with prior permission of hostel authorities and message from parents," the notice says. Ink sprinkled on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's name
The name of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, engraved on a marble wall of the Presidency University here was found sprinkled with black ink today, days after a bust of the Jana Sangh founder was defiled in the city. The wall is on the ground floor of the main building of the iconic institution on which the names of distinguished alumni of Presidency College, now a university, are engraved. Mookerjee had graduated from the college with a first class first in English in 1922. University Registrar Debajyoti Konar told PTI that the staff of the institution first noticed ink sprinkled on Mukherjee's name in the morning and alerted the authorities. Increase in number of schools, student enrolment in Delhi: Economic Survey
An increase in the expenditure on education, number of schools, student enrolment and student-teacher ratio was the highlight of the Economic Survey of Delhi, 2017-18, which was tabled in the Assembly today. According to the survey, the total investment in the education sector has increased by more than double in the budget, from Rs 5,491 crore in 2012-13 to Rs 11,300 crore in 2017-18. "This is the highest priority sector for the government, which got the biggest share of allocation -- 23.54 per cent of the total budget in 2017-18," the survey said. While the total number of schools in Delhi increased from 5,155 in 2012-13 to 5,772 in 2016-17, the number of students enrolled in the schools increased from 42.68 lakh in 2012-13 to 44.43 lakh in 2016-17, the survey said. The student-teacher ratio also rose to 30, it added. No decision yet on compensating students for "error" in class X English paper: CBSE
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today said it was undecided on providing compensation to Class X students for an alleged error in the English question paper. Teachers and students have been claiming that the paper held on March 12 had certain errors in the comprehension passage section. The passage section of the paper where students were expected to find synonyms of 'endurance, obstruction and motivation' in paragraphs two, four and five, respectively had its answers in paras three and six. Certain typos also led to confusion among students, an online petition started by a group of students said. Reports were doing round that the board has decided to compensate students for the "error", however, the board officials clarified that no decision has been taken yet. 12 injured in bee attack in Odisha
A swarm of bees today stung at least 12 students and teachers of a government-run primary school in Odisha's Kendrapara district, causing minor injuries to them, an education official said. The incident happened at Chatara-Chakada primary school in Derabish block in the district this morning, the headmaster of the school, Niranjan Pati, said. A swarm of bees, all of a sudden, entered various classrooms and attacked students and teachers, Pati said. The bees left the school premises after villagers chased the swarm with smoking torches, the principal of the school said. Classes were suspended for the day since the children were scared to go back to the classrooms, he added.
