Agitating school teachers lathi-charged in Odisha
Police today resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse a group of agitating school teachers, who had blocked the entry of other tutors to an exam paper evaluation centre here. Some of the protesting teachers have been detained for obstructing entry to Capital High School, an evaluation centre for the High School Certification Examination answer sheets, a police officer said. "There is no law and order problem. We are keeping a close watch on the situation," Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhaoi said. The agitating teachers, under the banner of Odisha School College Teachers' and Employees' United Forum, had earlier said they would boycott the evaluation process, which began from today, and stage demonstrations in front of 57 centres across the state. UGC grants autonomy to 60 higher educational institutions
In a historic decision, on Tuesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomy to 60 Higher Educational Institutions which have maintained high academic standards.This was announced by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar at a media briefing in the national capital. Javadekar said that the Government is striving to introduce a liberalized regime in the education sector and emphasis is on linking autonomy with quality.Giving further details, Javadekar said that the 60 institutions which have been granted autonomy includes 52 Universities (five central universities, 21 state universities, 24 deemed universities, and two private universities) and eight Collages.Javadekar also explained that these universities will remain within the ambit of UGC but will have the freedom to start new courses, off campus centers, skill development courses, research parks and any other new academic programs.They will also have the freedom to hire foreign faculty, ...

Three persons, including a teacher, have been arrested for allegedly leaking the SSC Board exam paper of History and Political Science (Part I) to students, police said today. The matter came to light yesterday after exam invigilator Sandhya Pawar saw three students constantly referring to their text books and mobile phones outside the exam hall at MVM Swami Muktanand High School in suburban Andheri, the official said. "On checking the mobile phone of one the students, Pawar found a question paper of History and Political Science stored in it. She alerted the senior officials present at the exam centre," he said. The incident took place before the exam, scheduled between 11am and 1pm, he said, adding that the students were allowed to answer the exam. Punjab school board cancels mathematics paper
Students of Class 12 scheduled to take the mathematics paper of the Punjab state board today were in for a shock after being told that the paper was leaked and hence, stood cancelled. The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) today directed the district education officers to not open the sealed question papers of the subject received by them after reports of an alleged paper leak, board official Komal Singh said. The test was to start at 2 pm and the PSEB got information of the'leak' at around 1 pm. It then sent instructions about its cancellation, which was conveyed to the candidates after they had entered the exam halls, Singh said. Now, the examination would be held on March 31. Singh said a high level probe was ordered and an FIR lodged against unknown persons. The leaked paper had gone viral on social media.

The Delhi's Patiala House Court on Tuesday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Atul Johri, who is accused of sexually harassing female students.Johri was out on bail hours after he was arrested by the Delhi police on charges of sexual harassment.At least nine women now have filed FIRs against Professor Atul Johri from the School of Life Sciences, accusing him of sexual harassment.The students have deemed the suspension of the professor as important because he continues to hold several academic and administrative posts and also that there is a possibility of his interference with the investigation yet to be conducted against him.
NLE will put undue stress on students from backward sections: Panel
Stating that National Licentiate examination (NLE) proposed in the National Medical Commission Bill would put "undue stress" on students, a parliamentary panel has recommended integrating it with the final year MBBS exam. The recommendations were made by the Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare in its report on the National Medical Commission Bill 2017, tabled in Parliament today. The NMC bill proposes that the licentiate exam be made compulsory for any MBBS doctor, including a foreign graduate, to make them eligible to practice medicine in India. As per the provision of the bill, a person who qualifies the National Licentiate Examination shall be enrolled in the National Register or State Register. "...the NLE will put undue stress on students, especially those who come from backward sections of the society and states, who cannot afford private guidance or tuitions for NLE and may not be able to crack the multiple choice questions (MCQs)," .
100 women get British Council's 70th Anniversary scholarships
Altogether 100 Indian women scholars have been awarded the British Council's 70th Anniversary Scholarships. The Anniversary Scholarships, the first British Council scholarship programme solely for women, cover tuition fees for a one-year Master's course in science, technology, engineering or mathematics during the 2018-19 academic year, a British Council statement said today. The scholarship is also part of the organisation's drive to partner the economic growth and meet knowledge ambitions of states across India. "We want to share the stories of the great things we've done together in the past 70 years, tell new stories and inspire millions of young people to develop connections for the next 70 years," British Council's Director India, Alan Gemmell OBE (Order of the British Empire) said. The programme, worth around Rs 18 crore, is British Council's largest investment in a scholarship programme in India, the statement said. The 100 scholars will be attending 44 British .
