BTC chief assures Gorkhas on land rights

The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary has assured the leaders of the All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) and other organisations that the land rights of the Gorkha people of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) will remain intact. Regarding the ongoing controversy over the new land policy of the BTC which governs BTAD comprising four districts, Hagrama told reporters yesterday that all the land rights of the protected class of the people as defined in Chapter X of Assam Land Revenue Regulation, 1886 would be applicable in the BTC area like other parts of Assam. Mohilary made the statement after meeting delegates of the AAGSU, the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and the Gorkha Sanmiloni among others. Ambedkar backs TISS students over scholarship demand

Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar has come out in support of students of the city-based Tata Institute Of Social Sciences (TISS), who have been protesting against the withdrawal of financial aid provided to them. Ambedkar demanded that the Maharashtra government release funds for the distribution of scholarships to students across the state, and said the issue will also be raised in the ongoing session of the Legislature. A section of students has been on strike since February 21 after the TISS administration asked many of them, who have been chosen for government scholarships but are yet to get the money, to clear their dues related to tuitions, dining and hostel fees. Police: 1 killed, another student hurt in school shooting

A 17-year-old girl has been killed in a shooting at dismissal time today at an Alabama high school and another 17-year-old male student has been injured, authorities said. Birmingham Interim Police Chief Orlando Wilson said at a news conference that authorities are seeking to determine whether the shooting shortly before 3:30 p.m at Huffman High School was accidental or if a gun since recovered by investigators was intentionally discharged. School officials said the shooting prompted a brief lockdown at the school in Alabama's largest city but that students were released and authorities have detetmined that the shooting did not come from "someone from the outside came into the school." Mah govt to form SIT to probe 'scam' in Edu & Rural Devt depts

The Maharashtra government today announced an SIT probe into the alleged scam in the School Education and Rural development departments, where fake recommendation letters were issued to teachers working under the Integrated Education for the Disabled Children scheme. The IEDC scheme was stopped in 2009, leaving 595 teachers in the lurch. However, over fake letters were allegedly issued by officials from the Education and Rural Development departments to enable those teachers to work in the Zilla Parishad schools. Congress MLC Chandrakant Raghuvanshi raised the issue in the Legislative Council through a calling attention motion. "After shutting down the Centre's IEDC scheme, ideally, the 595 teachers, who were working as special teachers, should have been taken into the local bodies as primary teachers and helpers should have been given positions as peons at the local level," Raghuvanshi said. "However, a few officials from the Rural Development and Education departments .

Pb Cabinet approves rationalisation policy for teachers

To overcome the shortage of teachers in higher and senior secondary schools, the Punjab Cabinet today approved a rationalisation policy, which would also help in efficacious and judicious utilisation of the services of teachers. The decision, taken under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, was aimed at ensuring optimal utilisation of human resources in schools where there are either no teachers or deficient staff. The rationalisation policy 2018-19 would also help in removing the distinction among various categories of schools and teachers to be posted irrespective of the nature of schools, an official spokesperson said. As per this policy, the post of the head teacher would only be created in primary schools if the number of students is more than 60 -- a move that would motivate teachers to increase the strength of primary schools and prevent wastage of available manpower. The teacher-student ratio at the state-level in various cadres is 27 in primary schools, 22 for .

New teachers transfer policy; transfers through computer software

Aiming to usher in greater transparency, the Punjab cabinet today cleared a transfer policy for teaching staff in government schools that will be implemented from the ensuing academic session, an official said. The Transfer Policy 2018, which the cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has approved, was drafted after detailed deliberations with various stakeholders, including the teachers, school heads, teacher unions and civil societies. The transfer policies of other states namely Haryana and Karnataka were also examined, an official spokesperson said. The Cabinet also agreed to the suggestions of its sub-committee that the transfer policy should be implemented through a computer software and in a transparent manner. Aadhaar not mandatory for enrolment of students in all India exams: SC

The Supreme Court today directed the CBSE not to make Aadhaar number mandatory for enrolment of students appearing in NEET 2018 and other all- India examinations. The top court said that the CBSE can take other identity proofs like passport number, driving licence, bank statement, voter card or ration card from the students for enrolling them for appearing in the examinations. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief justice Dipak Misra directed the CBSE to upload the information on its official website and clarified that this arrangement is made "for now" till the pendency of cases related to challenge to the Aadhaar and its enabling Act is not decided. A judicial committee set up to look into violence on the campus of the Banaras Hindu University has given a clean chit to then Vice Chancellor GC Tripathi who was under fire for allegedly mishandling the protests by students, university sources said today. In its report, the committee pointed out loopholes in the handling of the agitation last September by the state administration and also blamed "anti-social elements" and political parties for provoking the students.
