JNU forms committee to make entrance exam online

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has constituted a 12-member committee to look into the possibilities of making the JNU Entrance Examinations (JNUEE) completely online for 2019-20. On March 5, a notification was issued by Joint registrar admissions M K Pachauri saying that the vice-chancellor has constituted a committee to discuss and make recommendation for conducting JNUEE 2019-20 completely online "The committee shall examine various dimensions and submit the recommendation to the competent authority at the earliest," the notification read. One of the 12 committee members, Professor Bindu Puri, who confirmed to PTI about its formation said the committee is yet to meet. Turns out, high school students prefer their vegetables seasoned with spices rather than plain.According to a Penn State-study, high school students prefer vegetables seasoned with herbs and spices, rather than plain veggie, which might lead to students liking and eating more vegetables, and to result in less food waste in schools.The researchers asked high school students to rate the taste of a variety of vegetables seasoned with either oil or salt or a blend of herbs and spices developed specifically for each vegetable. Prime Minister will announce the expansion of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao program' (BBBP) from the existing 161 to 640 districts all over the country, on the occassion of International Women's Day tomorrow, from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. Minor boy sexually assaulted by teacher

A case has been registered against an Arabic teacher for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor boy."Yesterday (March 5), a man came to us to lodge a complaint that his son was sexually assaulted by an Arabic teacher," said Falaknuma Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Syed Fiyaz.According to the complainant, his nine-year-old son went for his regular tuition classes to learn Arabic in Madrassa, when the teacher sexually assaulted him in a bathroom.The accused, identified as M. Irfan, 22, is on the run, the police said.A case has been registered under sections 5 and 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) and a manhunt has been launched.

M.Ed cut-off mark to be lowered for SCs in Bihar

The Bihar government taken a move to lower the cut-off mark for Scheduled Caste students seeking admission to Master of Education courses in universities of Bihar, the state Assembly was informed today. In a calling attention motion, JD(U) MLA Shyam Rajak has said only two SC candidates got admission to M.Ed courses in the year 2016-17 as against 50 reserved seats in universities across the state. Rajak said the qualifying marks for seeking admission to the courses was fixed at 50 per cent for all social groups and no relief was given to the SCs. The seats which remained vacant were filled up by general category students, he said. Replying to this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shravan Kumar a reduction in the cut-off marks for SCs - from 50 per cent to 45 per cent - by means of amendment in statutes was under process. "The amendment will be sent to the Chancellor for approval following which the problem will be solved", Kumar said.

Director appointed at NERIST, 8-day long stalemate ends

The Centre today appointed Dr Hardeo Singh Yadav as the director of the North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) near here, ending an eight-day long stalemate at the central institute. The Students' Union of NERIST (SUN) had been agitating since February 27 demanding appointment of a regular director, but they were not happy with the appointment as it wanted a director from outside. Dr Yadav is a teacher at the NERIST. "The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal based on recommendation of the Search-cum- Selection Committee, for appointment of Dr H S Yadav to the post of Director, NERIST on contract basis for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge," a notification of the Union HRD ministry said today. Police firing during BTAD bandh, two injured

A 24-hour BTAD bandh in Assam today turned violent forcing police to open fire to control protesters in Chirang district in which two persons were critically injured, official sources said. The police resorted first to lathi charge, then bursting of tear gas shells and finally firing to disperse bandh supporters who threw stones, burnt motorcycles and blocked NH 31 by burning tyres at Sidli in the district, police said. Two persons were critically injured in the police action and were admitted to hospital, the sources said. The bandh sponsor - United Organisation Coordination Committee (UOCC), however, claimed that 37 of its supporters were injured in the police lathicharge. Tribal dept clerk held for accepting Rs 85,000 bribe

A junior clerk in Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) was arrested in Pandharkawda village in the district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 85,000 for extending an official favour, ACB said today. The accused, Rajendra Rangari, had allegedly sought the bribe for releasing educational aid for fees of the tribal students of a college in Pandharkawda, said an official. The management of the college approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau which in turn laid a trap and arrested Rangari from Indira Gandhi Chowk in Pandharkawda yesterday, he said. Rangari has been booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and was handed over to the local police.

B'desh madrasa burns students' mobile phones

An Islamic seminary in Bangladesh has burned hundreds of mobile phones seized from students claiming that they were getting distracted by it, according to a media report. Mufti Jasim Uddin, the superintendent of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, known as Hathazari Barha Madrasa said yesterday that the resident students are not allowed to use mobile phones, bdnews24 reported. We seize mobile phones, especially the ones that play music and videos, from the resident students during admission every year, he said, skirting a query as to whether they have destroyed the phones. Some students, requesting anonymity, told the newspaper that the authorities seized and burnt two sacks full of around 400 seized handsets on Sunday, the report said. IITKGP reaches out to rural students

The IIT Kharagpur has launched a study model that equips students, especially those belonging to rural schools, to become confident and knowledgable individuals. The project is called Innovative C minus 4 model for high school students, an IITKGP statement said. Under the C minus 4 model, high school students are trained and mentored so that they can teach students who are junior to them by four classes (minus 4), the statement said. 'C' refers to class while minus 4 implies junior (minus) by four classes. The research project has been undertaken by Prof T.K.
