India's first indigenously developed 700 MW nuclear power reactor at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat started commercial operations on Friday, a senior official said. "With great pleasure, this is to inform that our first indigenous 700 MWe Unit, KAPP-3, has become commercial on 30th June 2023 at 1000 Hrs," a senior KAPP official said. Presently, the unit is operating at 90 per cent of its total power, he said. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is building two 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at Kakrapar, which is also home to two 220 MW power plants. Various commissioning activities were underway at KAPP 4, which had achieved 96.92 per cent progress by May end, according to officials. A National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) will be developed in Gujarat at a cost of Rs 4,500 crore under the government's Sagarmala programme, an official statement said Friday. NMHC would be developed as an international tourist destination at Lothal, where the maritime heritage of India from ancient to modern times would be showcased and an "edutainment approach" using the latest technology would be adopted to spread awareness about the country's maritime heritage, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said. "Government will develop National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal, Gujarat, for an estimated cost of Rs 4,500 crore. NMHC to be developed as an international tourist destination, showcasing India's rich maritime heritage," it added. An onsite project progress review meeting will also be held on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Lothal.

This would be the ninth plant of Procter & Gamble in India, which owns popular brands like Ariel, Duracell, Gillette, Head & Shoulders, Oral-B, Pampers, Pantene, Tide, Vicks and Whisper. The new plant spread across a 50,000 sq metre area in Sanand will produce products that are part of P&G's global healthcare portfolio, especially digestives, a company statement said. "This facility will be operational over the next few years and is set to become an export hub for P&G globally, as it will help P&G India in serving consumers across the globe," it said. Besides, this will also help create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, thereby offering a significant boost to the local economy, it added. German industrial and automotive-component supplier Schaeffler on Wednesday announced the inauguration of a new manufacturing unit at its Savli (Vadodara) facility in Gujarat. The new unit will add additional capacities of over 10,000 sq m of production space, to the existing plant, and cater to the growing demand in the wind, heavy industries, and railway sectors, the company said. The expansion of the Savli plant's production capacity is a vital step towards driving localisation strategy and meeting the growing demands of the market, it stated. The MoU (memorandum of understanding) will be signed in the evening in Gandhinagar in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries, said a government release. On June 22, Micron had announced it will set up a semiconductor assembly and test plant in Gujarat entailing a total investment of USD 2.75 billion (around Rs 22,540 crore). Heavy rains lashed several parts of north Gujarat in the last 24 hours due to a depression, remnant of cyclonic storm Biparjoy, causing a flood-like situation in many villages of Banaskantha district, officials said on Monday.
