Cyclone Biparjoy: Western Railways terminates 56 trains to coastal Gujarat

The Western Railway on Monday short-terminated more than 50 trains heading to coastal areas of Gujarat in view of powerful cyclone 'Biparjoy' and is considering cancellation of several trains over the next three days, a release said. The WR is taking various measures including setting up disaster management rooms, help desks, and keeping relief trains ready. The wind speed is being monitored at five locations in Bhavnagar division, at eight sites in Rajkot and at three spots in Ahmedabad division on an hourly basis and station masters have been instructed to regulate or stop trains when the wind velocity exceeds 50 kmph, as per the release. According to IMD, 'Biparjoy' is likely to make landfall near the Jakhau port in Kutch district on Thursday afternoon as a 'very severe cyclonic storm' with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour. Authorities have moved 7,500 people to safer places and put in place an elaborate evacuation plan in Gujarat as powerful Cyclone 'Biparjoy' in the Arabian Sea appears set to hit the western state on June 15 with winds gusting up to 150 kilometres per hour, officials and the IMD said on Monday. In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed officials to ensure safe evacuation of people living in vulnerable locations in the path of the cyclone that was likely to make landfall on Thursday afternoon and will be preceded by extremely heavy rainfall. NCMC reviews preparedness for cyclone Biparjoy, assures Guj govt of help

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Monday met and reviewed the preparedness of the Gujarat government and central agencies for the impending Cyclone Biparjoy and assured the state of all help. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea and those at sea have been called back to safe berth, an official statement said. A total of 21,000 boats have been parked so far and a list of all vulnerable villages has been prepared for the purpose of evacuation, it said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reviewed the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy which is likely to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat on Thursday. Kejriwal to skip hearing in defamation case on Wednesday, seek documents

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh will not attend the hearing of a criminal defamation case against them at a court here on Wednesday, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said. The two AAP leaders have been summoned by the metropolitan magistrate's court on June 7 in the defamation case filed by Gujarat University over their "sarcastic" and "derogatory" statements regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree. Gujarat AAP legal cell head Pranav Thakkar said the duo will not appear before the court on Wednesday, but file an application seeking copies of documents related to the case. Guj HC asks govt to seek expert take on condition of old bridges in Gondal

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to seek expert opinion on the condition of two century-old bridges at Gondal town of Rajkot district on a PIL seeking their repair to avoid incidents like the Morbi bridge collapse. The division bench of Acting Chief Justice AJ Desai and Justice Biren Vaishnav directed the state government to depute experts to physically examine the bridges and file a report by the next date of hearing on June 28. It also issued notices to the Gondal municipality and additional engineer (design) of the roads and buildings department among other respondents. A public interest litigation, filed by lawyer Yatish Desai, stated that the bridges, which are both located on Gondal river, are around a century old and in a very dilapidated condition. Parts of Gujarat receive rainfall due to cyclonic circulation: IMD

Several parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, received rainfall on Sunday, and the met department has forecast light rainfall till June 6 morning across regions of the state as a result of cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and neighbouring areas.
