Heavy rain triggers landslide on NH-6 connecting Mizoram with rest of India

Heavy rain triggered a massive landslide on National Highway-6 that links Mizoram with the rest of the country, officials said on Friday. The landslide occured at Hunthar area on the western outskirts of Aizawl, they said. There have been no reports of fatalities so far. Work is underway to clear the debris on the stretch of the national highway, they said. Incessant rain for the past few days have triggered landslides in several parts of the state.

A woman drowned on Sunday after a car she was travelling in with her family got stuck in neck-deep water at KR Circle underpass, just a stone's throw from Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power in Karnataka. Fire and emergency services personnel saved five others of the family and the driver, with the help of people who had rushed to save those trapped in the flooded underpass in the heart of the city. 28% excess rainfall in India in pre-monsoon season so far, says IMD

India has received 28 per cent excess rainfall in the pre-monsoon season so far, with the central region gauging precipitation 268 per cent above normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. East and northeast India recorded 29 per cent rain deficit -- 141.5 mm against the normal of 199.9 mm -- from March 1 to May 3. Northwest India, i.e. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand, recorded 18 per cent more rainfall (98.3 mm against the normal of 83.4 mm), while the peninsular region received 88 per cent excess rain (102 mm against the normal of 54.2 mm) during this period. MeT issues 'yellow' alert for thunderstorm, lightning in Himachal for Apr 4

A 'yellow' alert for thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places has been issued for April 4 and a wet spell is predicted in the state till April 6, the Met office here said on Monday. Light rains continued to lash several parts of the state as Manali received 14 mm of rain followed by Dalhousie 12 mm, Shimla and Bhuntar 9 mm each, Narkanda 8.5 mm, Bharari 7 mm, Berthin and Amb 6 mm each and Sundernagar, Kufri and Pandoh 5 mm each. Following inclement weather conditions over the past few days, 13 roads have been closed to traffic in the state.
