Vijayendra Saraswathi succeeds Jayendra Saraswathi as Kanchi Sankaracharya

Vijayendra Saraswathi has succeeded as the 70th Jagadguru of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in Tamil Nadu's Kancheepuram after the demise of Jayendra Saraswathi."Our Swamy Ji who was the light for millions of Hindu devotees, who united people from various walks of life, his message of love, has now transcended. : Vijayendra Saraswathi, who will be the new head of Kanchi Sankara Mutt, today said people should abide by teachings and advice of his predecessor late Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and lead a spiritual life. "The guiding light (Jayendra Saraswathi) has shifted place and people should follow his teachings and lead a spiritual life", he told reporters here. Paying rich encomiums, the seer said the 69th mutt head, who passed away yesterday, knew the pulse of people and the country. He wished for the well being of all and he never used to discriminate between people, Vijayendra said in his brief message. He was speaking after the internement ceremony of the 82 year old Shankaracharya who died here following a cardiac arrest. Vijayendra Saraswathi, the junior pontiff, will succeed Jayendra Saraswathi.

Omar seeks divorce, wants to re-marry: HC told

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of Payal Abdullah, the estranged wife of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on his plea seeking divorce on the ground that their marriage has broken down irretrievably and he wants to get re-married. A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Deepa Sharma issued notice to Payal asking her to file a reply before the next date of hearing on April 23. The court also sought her stand on an application moved by Omar seeking early hearing in the matter. Advocate Malavika Rajkotia, appearing for Omar, claimed that the court had on an earlier date asked if the parties wanted to get married again. She replied in affirmative about Omar's intent, saying "I do". The application by Omar seeking grant of divorce has been moved in his petition challenging a trial court decision of August 30, 2016 dismissing his plea for divorce. Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial: Maha CM hands over letter to L&T

Work on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's memorial off the Arabian sea is expected to get a boost with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today handing over the 'Letter of Acceptance' to L&T for the project. "Historic day it is! 15 long years' wait is over," Fadnavis tweeted, after handing over the letter to L&T officials at the 'Vidhan Bhavan' in south Mumbai. "Maharashtra and our nation has waited for 15 long years for this monument of pride for every Indian," Fadnavis said. "I have given directions to start the actual work before monsoon. It is our government who took every permission for this grand memorial in a record time," he said. Last month, Fadnavis had authorised a high-powered committee headed by the chief secretary to start the memorial work soon. Prince William to make 1st official UK royal visit to Israel

Officials say Prince William will make the first official visit by a member of the British royal family to Israel and the Palestinian territories. Keith Richards apologises to Mick Jagger for vasectomy swipe

The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has apoligised to bandmate and singer Mick Jagger for suggesting that he should get a vasectomy. The 74-year-old guitarist, who is himself a father of four and has five grandchildren, had called Jagger a randy old bastard in an interview with the Wall Street Journal magazine. He was talking in reference to 74-year-old Jagger becoming a father for the eighth time in December 2016, when his girlfriend Melanie Hamrick gave birth to a son. Viral video shows two traffic cops thrashing man

A video has been making rounds in the social media that shows a man being dragged by two traffic cops at Delhi's Patel Nagar area.The video shows one cop holding the man by his arm while the other holds him by the belt and drag him a good 50 feet, as the traffic halts to watch the spectacle.Chief spokesperson of Delhi Police, Deepandra Pathak told ANI that the man along with a woman was on a scooter and both were without helmets, which prompted the traffic police to stop them."While fleeing from the police, the man's scooter tilted and he fell. When the police approached him, he assaulted them and began to flee again. Jayendra Saraswathi interred in Kanchi Mutt

Jayendra Saraswathi, the 69th pontiff of the Kanchi Mutt, was today buried in the Brindhavan annexe in the premises of the religious establishment here with Vedic honours. Amid chants, the body of the 82-year-old was lowered in the sitting posture into a large bamboo basket that had been placed inside the 7 ft x 7 ft burial pit in the annexe. The pit was filled with herbs like 'Vasambu,' salt, sandalwood and sand. Marking the conclusion of the ceremony which lasted for about three and a half hours beginning 7.45 am, a grand aarti was performed, with Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit also in attendance. The ceremony began with the performance of 'abishekam' on the body of Jayendra Saraswathi that was seated with folded hands in a chair. The mutt hall reverberated with hymns with emotional devotees bidding farewell to the revered saint. Para-swimmer Prasanta Karmakar suspended for recording video of female swimmers

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has suspended Para swimmer Prasanta Karmakar for three years after he was found recording video of female swimmers during an event in Jaipur last year.The incident took place during the National Para Swimming Championship, which was held in Jaipur from March 31, 2017 to April 3, 2017.The PCI revealed that Karmakar has been suspended after a written complaint regarding acts of misconduct, misbehavior and manhandling by the Arjuna awardee swimmer was reported."He (Karmakar) gave a camera to one of his associates and asked him to make video films of female swimmers during the event.
