CWC 2023: Ashwin trains intensely, hints of his inclusion in IND playing 11

Giving a strong indication of him turning up in India's World Cup opener against Australia here on Sunday, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin went through an engaging net session here on Thursday. Ashwin could be included as the third spinner behind Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav against the Aussies ahead of pacer Shardul Thakur considering a possibly gripping pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, and his hold over veterans David Warner and Steve Smith. Ashwin, who takes the ball away from the left-handers with his off-breaks, has had the measure of Warner in the past, dismissing him 11 times in the Tests. The Aussie had batted right-handed in the recent second ODI against India at Indore to counter Ashwin. Smith, a consistent run-scorer in ODIs, too had his struggles against the Indian maestro, especially in Test cricket. Hence, it would not be a big surprise to see Ashwin getting a nod ahead of Thakur in the first match at Chepauk. Ashwin, who replaced injured Axar Patel

World Cup 2023: Australia have a plan for Indian spinners, says Cummins

Australia skipper Pat Cummins on Thursday asserted that his team has a "plan" to tackle Indian spinners in the opening Cricket World Cup match, saying the victory in the third ODI at Rajkot had made the bunch a "confident" lot ahead of the blockbuster clash here on Sunday. India won the three-match series 2-1, but Australia won the Rajkot tie by 66 runs after notching a mammoth 352. Cummins indicated the confidence stemmed from the fact that the Australians had played Indian spinners in the past and done well. "It (preparation) starts with training for the next few days before the game. The Australian guys play a lot of spin. Our batting order had played a lot in India and done well, so they know most of the (Indian) bowlers and they have a plan (in place)." "We are really confident. We had a good win in the third ODI (in Rajkot), which is probably a bit closest to our strongest XI. We have had pretty good records in ODIs in India," added the skipper during a promotional event ...

India seal series after sublime hundreds from Gill, Iyer script 99-run win

Shubman Gill showed his insatiable hunger for runs with fifth hundred of the year while Shreyas Iyer hit a timely ton under pressure to set up a series sealing 99-run win for India in the second ODI against Australia here on Sunday. Gill (104 off 97 balls) and Iyer (105 off 90 balls) shared a stroke-filled 200-run stand off 164 balls before Suryakumar Yadav (72 not out off 37 balls) unleashed carnage to fire India to 399 for five, the hosts' highest total against Australia in ODIs. Skipper K L Rahul chipped in with 52 off 38 balls. Rain stopped play for the second time in the game when Australia were 56 for two in nine overs. With the revised target of 317 in 33 overs, they fell further behind in the game and ended with 217 all out in 28.2 overs. David Warner (53 off 39), who batted right-handed against R Ashwin (3/41), and Sean Abbott (54 off 36), had a good hit in the middle. The series win without their five main players in the squad was a big boost for India ahead of the World

I love to put myself in challenging situations: KL Rahul after win over AUS

India's stand-in captain KL Rahul believes it is always good to put himself in "challenging situations", especially after returning from a long injury lay-off. Leading the side in the first two ODIs against Australia in absence of Rohit Sharma, Rahul struck an unbeaten 58 as India won by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match dress rehearsal series before the World Cup. "Not the first time, always happens with me. I'm used to it, I love it," Rahul said about leading the side in place of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. "I think the intensity in the afternoon was great, after Colombo this felt like heaven at the start but it was really hot and humid. It gets tough and physically challenging, but we've all worked on our fitness and that's showing on the field." Rahul said it was imperative to build a partnership with Suryakumar Yadav (50) once set Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) departed. "After Shubman got out, it was a bit tricky with the set batter out. But ..

You shouldn't feel low if you are not in playing XI: Shami after fifer

"When I was playing regularly, there must have been someone, who had to sit out and I wasn't guilty. So you can't feel low if you are sitting out because the team is winning," a pragmatic Mohammed Shami said when asked about the sporadic chances he has been getting in 50-over cricket of late. The Indian team management has indicated that when it plays full strength during the upcoming World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be the two front-line pacers. But after his match-winning figures of 5 for 51, Shami said that rotation isn't a bad thing when you play so many matches on the bounce. "This is the team's plan and it is important to stick with it. You can't be always in the playing XI because a lot depends on the team combination," Shami said. "If you are playing, well and good and if you are not in the playing XI, then you should be supportive of those, who are playing. I think there is no point feeling low and I am ready to play the role the team gives me," Shami said

IND vs AUS 2nd ODI preview: Pressure mounts on Shreyas Iyer and Ashwin

Shreyas Iyer will be desperate for some runs after missing out on a flat track while the skillful R Ashwin will be searching for wickets in the middle overs when India take on Australia in the second ODI here on Sunday. Despite missing four first-XI players, including skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India were able to win the first ODI rather comfortably and look on course to secure the series at the Holkar Stadium which usually produces high-scoring games. Rain in the city has brought the temperature down which will be welcomed by the players from either side after experiencing unusual heat and humidity in Mohali. The game on Friday had enough positives for India, mainly the performance of Mohammad Shami and Suryakumar Yadav, but few questions still need to be answered ahead of the World Cup, beginning October 5. India's designated number 4 Iyer, whose fitness came under the scanner in the Asia Cup even though he was coming back from a long injury-lay off, has not been able

With Ashwin, lack of game time is not much of concern: Rohit Sharma

Ravichandran Ashwin finds himself in contention for a World Cup spot despite lack of game time but it doesn't concern skipper Rohit Sharma one bit. The 37-year-old Ashwin, who last played an ODI in January 2022, was picked for the upcoming three ODIs against Australia alongside Washington Sundar. Both the off-spinners will be fighting for that potential World Cup spot if Axar Patel doesn't get fit in time for the global event beginning October 5. "With the kind of experience Ashwin has, close to 100 Tests (94), close to 150 ODIs (113) and yes it is all in the past but he has been consistently playing Test cricket and with guys like Ashwin having game time is not so much of a concern," said Rohit after the squad was announced for Australia series beginning September 22. "...with guys like him, it's all in the head, more than body and the stuff. We made the decision speaking to him and understanding where he is at with regards to his body and stuff like that. "It's not like he is not

Axar likely to miss 2 ODIs against Australia, Shreyas 99 percent fit: Rohit

India captain Rohit Sharma on Friday said left-arm spinner Axar Patel is likely to miss the first two ODIs against Australia next week while middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is "99 percent" match-fit. Axar had suffered a left quadriceps strain during the inconsequential Super 4 match against Bangladesh on Friday and was ruled out of the Asia Cup. Washington Sundar was drafted in as Axar's replacement in India's Asia Cup squad. The PTI had reported on Saturday that Axar will be out of Australia series and could also be a doubtful starter for the World Cup. The worrying part is that MRI scans have revealed that its a hamstring tear. "Axar had a small tear. It looks like maybe it will take a week or 10 days (to heal), I don't know. We have to see how that injury progresses. Some guys recover quickly, and I hope that's the case with him," skipper Rohit didn't seem too confident about the speed of recovery for the Gujarat all-rounder. "I am not sure whether he will be able to play the .

Australia head coach McDonald credits subcontinent journey for WTC triumph

They might have failed to conquer the 'Final Frontier' on their last tour of India, but Australia head coach Andrew McDonald feels their "sub-continent journey" helped them get the World Test Championship mace. Having missed out due to over-rate penalties in the 2019-21 cycle, Australia on Sunday became the first team to win ICC world titles across formats when they defeated India by 209 runs in a lopsided WTC Final at the Oval here. "You can string down series in isolation, you can talk about the subcontinent journey where we went from Pakistan to Sri Lanka into India," McDonald told reporters. "We had to navigate through that. So, it was a tricky World Test championship cycle and I think the wins in the subcontinent got us here." The Pat Cummins-led side had enjoyed some splendid wins in the sub-continent before travelling to India in pursuit of its first Test series triumph since 2004-05 in the final leg of the WTC cycle.
