Security forces fired at by militants in J-K's Anantnag; combat underway

An encounter broke out Sunday between the militants and security forces in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The security forces had launched a search and cordon operation in Andan in Sangam area of the district following information about presence of militants there, a police officer said. The operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire at the security forces. According to the police, there were no reports of any casualties so far on either side and the combat was still underway.

Northern Army commander thanks people for help post chopper's hard-landing

Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi on Friday visited Machna village in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district and thanked the villagers for providing timely assistance to the crew after the hard-landing of a chopper of the security forces on May 4. The Army helicopter crashed after the hard landing in a forested area in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district 4 following a technical fault, killing a technician and injuring the two pilots on board. The advanced light helicopter (ALH) Dhruv was on an operational mission and it came down on the banks of a river in Marwah area, cut off from the district headquarters due to heavy snow. "I was in Srinagar. There were DCs and DGP. I told them that I am coming here (village) to thank you all," Lt Gen Dwivedi told the villagers. Prez Droupadi Murmu confers eight Kirti Chakras, 29 Shaurya Chakras

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday conferred eight Kirti Chakras, including five posthumously, to personnel of the Army and paramilitary and police forces for displaying indomitable courage and extraordinary valour in the line of duty. Kirti Chakra is India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. Imphal peaceful but tense; gunfights between militants, security forces

The Imphal Valley in Manipur remained peaceful but tense on Friday, however intermittent gunfights between militant groups and security forces were reported from the hill districts surrounding the valley. The exchanges of fire between militant groups, who have involved themselves in the ethnic clashes in the state, and security forces were reported at Kangvai in Churachandpur district, western hill range of Phougakchao in adjoining Bishnupur district and Dolaithabi and Pukhao in Imphal East district, a senior police officer said. However, it was not immediately known whether there was any casualty on either side. DNA fingerprinting of defence personnel has helped in 12 cases: DGAFMS

Blood samples are being collected in a graded manner as part of DNA fingerprinting of armed forces personnel and this process has so far helped identify mortal remains in 12 cases, including the helicopter crash that killed then Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, said Lieutenant General Daljit Singh, Director General - Armed Forces Medical Service (DGAFMS), on Monday. Singh was addressing the press on the sidelines of the Pune-based Armed Forces Medical College's (AFMC)'s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It is an ongoing process in which blood samples are being collected in a graded manner for archiving in the repository that is maintained at AFMC's Department of Forensic Medicine, he said. Solar Industries to supply UAV 'Nagastra' to Indian Army

Solar Industries Nagpur on Friday said it has bagged an order to supply unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) 'Nagastra' to the Indian Army, beating competitors from Israel and Poland. A Solar Industries official said with government's initiative to bring Atmanirbharta in ammunition and defence systems, the first indigenous Loiter Munition (LM), Nagastra1, has been designed and developed by Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Solar Industries Nagpur, in association with Z-Motion, Bangalore. A model of 'Nagastra -1' loitering munition was recently displayed in the Army Commanders conference held in New Delhi. The company said that Nagastra -1 having an indigenous content of more than 75 per cent has many world class features. It said that in a 'Kamikaze mode' it can neutralise any hostile threat with GPS enabled precision strike with an accuracy of 2 m.
