What about 'Mann ki Baat' on inflation and unemployment? Maha Cong chief

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday wondered when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will do a 'Mann ki Baat' on issues such as inflation and unemployment. On a day when the 100th episode of PM Modi's monthly radio programme was aired, Patole said the prime minister should clarify his ties with businessman (Gautam) Adani. ''Instead of talking about other things, Modiji should tell people about his relationship with Adani," the Congress leader told reporters. "The 100th episode of PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' was celebrated with great fanfare. During these 100 episodes, PM Modi never mentioned the burning issues of the country such as inflation, unemployment, the collapsing economy, encroachment by China, sexual abuse of women wrestlers by BJP MP, '40% corrupt' government in Karnataka, farmers etc," Patole alleged. In a dig, he said in a democracy one should do 'janta ki baat' by speaking about the issues of the masses and not 'Mann Ki Baat'. He said the people of the countr

Europe's economy barely gains momentum as inflation pinches consumers

The European economy scraped out meager growth in the first three months of the year, barely gaining momentum as stubborn inflation raises the price of groceries and erodes people's willingness to spend paychecks that are failing to keep pace. Friday's less-than-stellar increase of 0.1 per cent from the previous quarter follows disappointing growth estimates from the US, which kept alive fears of a looming recession in the world's largest economy. The 20 countries that use the euro currency picked up a little speed from January through March after zero growth in the last three months of 2022. The eurozone avoided a winter recession thanks to mild weather that alleviated pressure on natural gas supplies. European governments and utilities also scrambled to line up additional sources to heat homes, generate electricity and power factories after Russia cut off most of its supply to the continent over its war against Ukraine. Germany, Europe's largest economy, turned in disappointing z

Supply side problems adding to inflation, govt monitoring continuously: FM

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said seasonal supply side problems add to inflation and that they are being monitored continuously with efforts being made to bring down prices of essential commodities. Highlighting that efforts have also been made to bring down fuel and natural gas prices, she said these are imports coming into the country and the prices are high in the global market, due to the impact of Covid and Russia-Ukraine war. "On prices, since November 2021, when the Prime Minister himself has instructed us to reduce the excise duty on fuel, as a result before Deepavali one announcement was made. Then sometime in June 2022, again we reduced the excise duty further. As a result, price of fuel came down somewhat," Sitharaman said during a press conference here. "But when we are speaking about fuel or natural gas, we need to understand one thing: these are products which are imported, and particularly after Covid and particularly even more after the war

Inflation's grip on businesses loosened in March at the wholesale level

Inflation's grip on businesses loosened greatly in March, raising hopes that companies and consumers will suffer less from high prices as 2023 rolls on. The U.S. government said plunging energy prices pulled the producer price index down 0.5% in March from February. It marks the biggest decrease in producer prices in three years and follows other reports showing easing inflation on broader consumer prices. Producer prices, also known as wholesale costs, track prices in the production process before they reach the consumer. As a result, the producer price index can provide early signs of where inflation is headed. Some producer price data is also used in the construction of the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, and so the decline in producer prices means the Fed's preferred index may also decline or come in very low when it is reported next week. Lower prices paid by businesses on raw materials and other items means they are less likely to raise prices in the month
