A massive fire broke out Wednesday at a multi-story commercial building in Pakistan's largest southern port city of Karachi, killing at least three people and damaging several shops, police and rescue officials said. The fire started at a furniture store and quickly engulfed other shops on the ground floor of the building known as Ayesha Manzil, said Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. He said firefighters doused the flames after hectic efforts. Wahab and hospital officials said three people died in the blaze and one person was injured. TV footage showed billowing into the sky as flames engulfed parts of the building. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear and officers said they were still investigating. Most structures in Karachi, and other parts of the country, lack fire prevention and firefighting systems, which often results in damages and casualties. Massive fire in shopping mall in Pakistan kills 11, many feared trapped

A massive fire tore through a shopping mall in Pakistan's Karachi city on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and injuring six, officials said. The fire that broke out at around 7 am on the second floor engulfed the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the shopping mall, but it was not clear what caused it. Twelve fire tenders, a snorkel and around 50 firefighters were called to control the fire and rescue around 42 people in the building. Chief Fire Officer Mubin Ahmed said that 11 people were killed and six injured in the blaze mostly due to smoke inhalation and panic as the electricity to the building had to be cut off to control the blaze. Our teams are still searching for anyone still in the building but we rescued 42 people, all males who were present when the fire broke out around 7 am this morning, he told PTI. Pak Railways suspend six officers for negligence that led to train accident

Pakistan Railways has suspended six officials, including a divisional engineer and a works manager, for their alleged negligence that led to a major train accident in the country's Sindh province that killed at least 34 people. IndiGo's Delhi-Doha flight diverted to Karachi due to medical emergency

An IndiGo flight from the national capital to Doha was diverted to Karachi due to a medical emergency onboard, the airline said on Monday. According to a statement, the flight 6E-1736 was diverted due to the medical emergency but "unfortunately, on arrival, the passenger was declared dead by the airport medical team. The flight was operating from Delhi to Doha in Qatar and was diverted to Karachi in Pakistan. The airline said it was making arrangements for transferring the other passengers of the flight, in coordination with the relevant authorities. "We are deeply saddened by the news and our prayers and wishes are with his family and loved ones," IndiGo said in the statement.

Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf to be buried in Karachi

Pakistan's former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf will be laid to rest on Tuesday in the Army Cantonment area here, officials said. Musharraf, the architect of the Kargil War in 1999 and Pakistan's last military ruler, died on Sunday in Dubai after a prolonged illness. Two Pakistani women were killed and 13 others injured in a gas explosion in their apartment in Karachi's heavily populated Gulistan-e-Jauhar area, police said. A senior police officer said that a 40-year-old woman and her 18-year-old daughter were killed in the explosion on Saturday night. The explosion which took place late at night was so powerful that it also damaged other flats on the floor and left 13 people injured, he said. The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.
