Ryanair flies record number of passengers in 2018

Ryanair flew more than 139 million passengers last year, a record high, as the contribution by an Austrian subsidiary offset the effects of strikes, the Irish no-frills carrier said Thursday. The number of passengers grew by eight per cent to 139.2 million in 2018, although the rate of growth was lower than the 10-per cent increase recorded a year earlier. The 2018 total included 300,000 passengers carried by Ryanair's Austrian budget carrier Laudamotion. Ryanair suffered Europe-wide strikes last year and faces the threat of further walkouts in 2019 by staff unhappy with working conditions, including pay. This comes despite the airline reaching labour agreements last year with several unions representing disgruntled cabin crew and pilots.

Three child labourers rescued from factory in Delhi: DCW

Cabinet approves bill to provide statutory recognition to trade unions

The government Wednesday approved amendment to the Trade Unions Act, 1926 to make provisions regarding recognition of trade unions. The present act provides for only registration of trade unions. Currently, there is no provision for recognition of unions in the Act. However, the recognition of trade union is governed by guidelines in the 'Code of Discipline' evolved in 1958, voluntarily accepted by employers and employees. The recognition is necessary because recognised trade union of an industry or establishment gets bargaining or negotiating rights with the employer. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved amendment to the Trade Unions Act, 1926 to make provisions regarding recognition of Trade Unions," an official statement said. According to the statement these amendments will facilitate recognition of trade unions at central and state level; ensure true representation of workers in tripartite bodies; check on the arbitrary nomination of workers' ...

S Africa launches minimum wage ahead of election

South Africa introduced its first minimum wage on Tuesday, with President Cyril Ramaphosa saying millions of workers would be better paid as he readies for a tricky election in May with the national economy struggling for growth. Trade unions have been split over whether to support the minimum wage, which has been set at 20 rand (1.39 dollars) an hour. "Millions of South African workers will benefit," Ramaphosa said in his New Year message. "This is the result of many decades of tireless struggle and is a powerful demonstration of the shared resolve of all social partners to tackle poverty and inequality." The African National Congress (ANC) party hopes that the move will appeal to its traditional electoral base among poor township and rural voters. Support for the ruling party dipped during the rule of scandal-marred Jacob Zuma, when it lost control of the economic hub Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria in municipal polls two years ago. Zuma was ousted by lawmakers early last year
