No promise for Union Territory in Bodo areas in Assam: Interlocutor
The Central government has not given any promise to any group to constitute a Union Territory for the Bodo dominated areas in Assam, Centre's interlocutor for talks with Assam-based militant groups A B Mathur said Sunday. The comments come amid strong protests by some non-Bodo organisations in Assam against any such move. "It is absolutely wrong. No promise has been given to anyone," Mathur told PTI when asked whether the central government has given any promise to constitute a union territory in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) in Assam. Mathur said he did not have any formal meeting with any delegation of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) in the recent past. "Two-three leaders of the ABSU came to see me four days ago. The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Friday clarified that there is a proposal to pay employers for extended maternity benefit from government budget and not from any labour welfare cess."The Ministry of Labour and Employment is in the process of obtaining necessary budgetary grant and approvals of Competent Authorities. Meat producer agrees to USD 4M payment to settle labour claims
The US branch of the world's largest meat producer will pay USD 4 million in back wages and other monetary relief as part of a consent decree settling allegations by federal labour officials. The Greeley Tribune reports the US Department of Labour claimed in two actions that JBS USA discriminated based on race and gender against applicants for labourer positions at its facilities in Hyrum, Utah, and Cactus, Texas. The company with US headquarters in Greeley, Colorado, has agreed to pay 12,625 class members at those facilities and hire 1,664 of the applicants. It has also agreed to retain an independent workplace consultant to review and revise its hiring process. The government will give employers the salaries for seven of the 26 weeks of maternity leave for women earning more than Rs 15,000 a month, the Women and Child Development ministry announced on Thursday. The announcement, which covers the government as well as the private sector, comes in the wake of complaints that many companies were reluctant hire pregnant women after maternity leave was extended from 12 to 26 weeks and some were even firing women employees. Indian universities are ceding ground to global competitors in preparing students for the modern workplace, according to new data analysis released on Thursday from the Global University Employability Ranking'. The annual ranking, produced by French HR consultancy Emerging and published by the 'Times Higher Education', lists the top 150 institutions worldwide for employability, based on a global survey of around 7,000 recruitment and international managers from major businesses. A Wisconsin company is giving employees revolvers for Christmas in what it says is an effort to promote personal safety and team building. Ben Wolfgram is co-owner of Hortonville-based BenShot. The company makes novelty glassware embedded with a bullet to make it look like it's been shot. Wolfgram has 16 full-time employees, some of whom have never fired a gun. 4 child labourers rescued on Children's Day
Four child labourers were rescued from three work places at Jalukbari area of the city on Wednesday by a task force on child labour, an official release said. Three of them were working in two restaurants and another in a slaughter house. They had been identified and rescued on the Children's Day by the Kamrup Metro District Task Force Committee on Child Labour. An FIR was lodged against their employers, the release said.
