India will open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, meeting the long-pending demand of the fast-growing Indian American community in these two large American cities. While Boston is considered as the education and pharma capital of the US, Los Angeles, home to Hollywood, is hosting the next summer Olympics and current US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti is the city's former mayor. Friends last year, I had announced that our government had plans to open a new consulate in Seattle. It is now operational. I had asked for suggestions from you for two more consulates. I am happy to announce that after reviewing your suggestions, India has decided to open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, Modi announced during his address to Indian Americans in New York's Nassau Veterans Coliseum. India currently has six consulates in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle. The Embassy is in Washington DC. The ...
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India has no role in causing destruction to the world, in an apparent criticism of the West. Addressing thousands of Indian-Americans at a community event in New York, Modi said that India has 17 per cent of the world's population and its carbon emissions are less than four per cent. Talking about India's green energy transition, he said a large number of green jobs are being created in India. "India represents about 17 per cent of the world's population, and despite that, our contribution to emission is about only four per cent," he said, adding India today has "no role in causing destruction to the world. China is the world's biggest carbon emitter followed by the US, India and the EU. "Our carbon emission is almost negligible, he said, adding that like other countries, India could also have opted for a carbon fuel-driven growth. But that's not the case. It's India's tradition for the love of nature, and that is why India is focu

Bipartisan lawmakers across the US have strongly condemned the vandalism at a Hindu temple here and called for an investigation into the incident, asserting that America must stand together against all forms of hate. The road and the signage outside the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, New York, were sprayed with expletives on Monday, according to footage shared online. The BAPS Public Affairs said in a post on X that it was deeply saddened by the desecration of the temple, calling it an act aimed at inciting hatred against Hindus". Sunday was to be a day of relative rest for Donald Trump, a rare breather this deep into a presidential campaign. Aside from sounding off on social media, golf was on the agenda. Then the Secret Service spotted the muzzle of a rifle sticking out of a fence in bushes at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club, and everything changed. For the second time in just over two months, someone apparently tried to shoot Trump and came dangerously close to the former president in that effort within 500 yards Sunday, law enforcement officials said. This time, the gunfire came from the Secret Service, before the suspect could get any shots off at his target. The episode raised sharp questions about how to keep the former president safe -- not only while he is campaigning across the country, but while he spends time at his own clubs and properties. Trump has had stepped-up security since the assassination attempt on him in July, when he was wounded in the ear during an attack that laid bare a series
Harish stated that South-South Cooperation offers the potential to build stronger ties among countries of the Global South
India's new Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish assured the country's commitment to reformed "multilateralism" and "revitalisation" of the UN as he presented his credentials to UN chief Antonio Guterres here. Deeply honoured to present my letter of credence to UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres. It is a matter of great pride and immense responsibility to represent India at the United Nations, Harish said in a post on X and thanked Guterres for his friendship and support for India. Harish, who arrived in New York last week to take charge as India's envoy to the world body, presented his credentials to Guterres at the UN headquarters Monday during an official ceremony. You are extremely welcome. India is a fundamental pillar of the democratic system in the UN and cooperation between India and the UN is exemplary. We believe that in your presence it will become even stronger, Guterres said as Harish presented his credentials to him. Harish conveyed to
Jailed ex-movie mogul Harvey Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery at a New York City hospital on Monday, his representatives said. Weinstein, 72, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan from the Rikers Island jail complex late Sunday due to severe medical conditions, his publicist Juda Engelmayer and prison consultant Craig Rothfeld said. We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein had a procedure and surgery on his heart today, they said, declining further comment on his condition. News of Weinstein's hospitalization was first reported by ABC News. Weinstein has been in an out of Bellevue Hospital since returning to Rikers Island from state prison in April after an appeals court overturned his 2020 rape and sexual assault convictions and ordered a new trial. In July, he was hospitalized for treatment for a variety of health problems including COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs, his representatives said. The state's Court of Appeals found that the judge in the 2020 trial unfai
Describing India as a leader at the United Nations, General Assembly President Dennis Francis has said the country has been an avid and committed advocate of multilateralism and as a democracy of 1.4 billion people, it has a bright future in making a continued strong contribution to global affairs. The remarks by Francis, the President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, came ahead of the end of his year-long tenure on Monday as head of the 193-member UN body. There's no doubt about it - India is definitely a leader at the United Nations. India has been an avid and committed advocate of multilateralism, which is very much valued by the United Nations, Francis told PTI in an exclusive interview here. Former Prime Minister of Cameroon Philemon Yang will take over as President of the 79th Session of the General Assembly on September 10. Francis underlined that he expects India's role to continue and be strengthened. "We know of course that India has an ambition to become
Spared from prosecution in Britain on Thursday, Harvey Weinstein now faces the prospect of a new indictment in New York, where prosecutors retrying the disgraced movie mogul's rape case are taking steps to potentially charge him with up to three additional sex assaults. Britain's Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised two charges of indecent assault against Weinstein in 2022, announced Thursday that it decided to discontinue the proceedings because there was "no longer a realistic prospect of conviction". "We have explained our decision to all parties," the CPS said in a statement. "We would always encourage any potential victims of sexual assault to come forward and report to police, and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met." At the same time, the Manhattan district attorney's office in New York has begun presenting evidence to a grand jury of up to three previously uncharged allegations against Weinstein -- two sexual assaults in the mid-2000s and another sexual .

A New York federal judge dismissed the claims on Thursday, finding that Musk's statements were 'aspirational' rather than 'factual and susceptible to being falsified'
New York state lawyers urged an appeals court late Wednesday to uphold Donald Trump's nearly USD 500 million civil fraud judgment, arguing there's overwhelming evidence to support a judge's finding that the former president lied for years about his wealth as he built his real estate empire. In paperwork filed ahead of oral arguments next month, New York Attorney General Letitia James' office said the current Republican nominee's appeal is awash in meritless legal arguments and ignores volumes of trial evidence showing that he and his co-defendants engaged in "fraud and illegality on an immense scale." On appeal, defendants tellingly ignore almost all their deceptions, Assistant Solicitor General Daniel S Magy wrote in a 168-page submission to the state's mid-level appeals court known as the Appellate Division. Trump, his company and top executives including his sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr created and used financial statements rife with blatant misrepresentations and omissions to .

Amid instances of unscrupulous elements overcharging members of the Indian community for consular services and other fraudulent activities, India's mission here has cautioned against using such agents and highlighted measures undertaken by it to streamline visa, passport and other services for the diaspora. Consul General of India in New York Binaya Pradhan told reporters here that several instances have come to the notice of the Consulate where various travel agents are "misusing people's trust". They have been charging higher amounts of money in the name of providing services. Such unscrupulous elements have overcharged applicants for assistance in getting Consular services such as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), visa, passport and an emergency certificate. Pradhan cited instances where travel agents have charged as much as USD 450 to provide an emergency certificate to travel to India, while such a service costs only USD 17. The Consulate said it has also come across instances

A man who severely injured author Salman Rushdie in a frenzied knife attack in western New York faces a new charge that he supported a terrorist group. An indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Buffalo on Wednesday charges Hadi Matar with providing material support to Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon and backed by Iran. The indictment didn't detail what evidence linked Matar to the group. The federal charge comes after Matar earlier this month rejected an offer by state prosecutors to recommend a shorter prison sentence if he agreed to plead guilty in Chautauqua County Court, where he is charged with attempted murder and assault. The agreement also would have required him to plead guilty to a federal terrorism-related charge, which hadn't been filed yet at the time. Instead, both cases will now proceed to trial separately. Jury selection in the state case is set for Oct. 15. Matar, 26, has been held without bail since the 2022 attack, during which he stabbed Rush
