NCPCR finalises guidelines for child artistes in entertainment industry

Apex child rights body NCPCR has finalised guidelines to regulate children's participation in the entertainment industry and widened its scope to cover social media and OTT platforms for the first time, its chairperson said here. The draft guidelines released last year sought suggestions from stakeholders in the matter. Now, these guidelines have been finalised and uploaded, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo said. According to the guidelines, a producer would need permission from the district magistrate concerned before a child participates in audio-visual media production or any commercial event. They also state that junk food, including chips, carbonated beverages and other snacks and drinks, shall not be advertised during a programme meant for children or on a channel meant exclusively for children, Kanoongo added. Police deployed in UP's Tilhar after post on Prophet flares tempers

Security was stepped up in the Tilhar area of the district here after a large number of people gathered outside a police station demanding the arrest of a youth accused of sharing a social media post on Prophet Mohammad, police said on Wednesday. The accused has since been arrested and police have been deployed at his house to prevent any flare-ups. It's the algorithms: Study finds YouTube sends gun videos to 9-year-olds

When researchers at a nonprofit that studies social media wanted to understand the connection between YouTube videos and gun violence, they set up accounts on the platform that mimicked the behavior of typical boys living in the U.S. They simulated two nine-year-olds who both liked video games, especially first-person shooter games. The accounts were identical, except that one clicked on the videos recommended by YouTube, and the other ignored the platform's suggestions. The account that clicked on YouTube's suggestions was soon flooded with graphic videos about school shootings, tactical gun training videos and how-to instructions on making firearms fully automatic. One video featured an elementary school-age girl wielding a handgun; another showed a shooter using a .50 caliber gun to fire on a dummy head filled with lifelike blood and brains. Many of the videos violate YouTube's own policies against violent or gory content. The findings show that despite YouTube's rules and conten

SC verdict on Centre-Delhi services triggers meme fest on social media

The Supreme Court's verdict on the contentious Centre-Delhi services matter has triggered a flood of memes on social media with several netizens sharing posters, video clips, and images from popular films like 'Lagaan' and 'Nayak' along with humour-laced captions eliciting mirth and chuckles. In a major win for the AAP government, the apex court on Thursday, in a unanimous verdict, ruled that the Delhi government has legislative and executive powers over services except for public order, police, and land. An hour after the verdict, the AAP's Twitter handle shared a video clip of a scene from the climax of the 2001 Aamir Khan-starrer film 'Lagaan' wherein the main protagonist 'Bhuvan' takes a ragtag team of natives to victory in a cricket match against British players. "Finally, 'hum jeet gaye'," the Kejriwal-led party tweeted along with the clip, echoing the line from the movie. The party also ran a hashtag '#KejriwalJeetGaya' and shared video snippets of his old speeches. In one

Social media appeal to voters outside polling area not under law: EC

With the Congress accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of violating the law by issuing appeals to Karnataka voters through social media during the "silence period", sources in the Election Commission on Tuesday said such appeals made outside the polling area do not come under the ambit of the existing law. The law, as exists, prohibits the act "in any polling area" only, they said. They also said the parties alleging violation of Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act through the use of social media have themselves put up a number of such posts even on their official social media handles. Section 126 specifically does not cover the use of social media or intermediaries during the silence period. It also does not cover violations outside the poll area, the sources said. Section 126 of the Act restricts the public display of election matter in the polling area during the "silence period" thereby limiting its application only to the display of election matter in the poll
