Global space economy to reach $1 trn in coming years: Ex-Isro chief

Former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) A S Kiran Kumar on Tuesday said the global space economy would reach USD 1 trillion-mark in the coming years which would provide a huge opportunity for the country's youth. Kumar was speaking at the third convocation of Karnavati University at its campus in Uvarsad village of Gandhinagar district as the Guest of Honour. "Space economy, expected to grow to USD one trillion in coming years, is beckoning India to build on its current technological capability and become a significant player and benefit in the process," the former ISRO chief said. India is transforming itself from a space-capable country to a country with space technology capacity and this would bring huge opportunities for the country's youth, he said. India is one of the few countries with end-to-end capability of building rockets, satellites and payloads despite the fact that "technology and its access were denied or restricted" to it in the early ...

IN-SPACe inks pact with deep tech startup to develop satellite QKD products

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bangaluru-based deep tech startup QNu Labs to develop indigenous Satellite QKD (quantum key distribution) products. With this MoU, QNu Labs, with the support of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and IN-SPACe, aims to demonstrate unlimited distance Satellite QKD based quantum secure communication, according to a joint statement on Tuesday. Terrestrial QKD systems have the limitation of requirement of repeaters every 100-150 kms, which is a big hindrance in creating a large-scale Quantum Secure Network, it was noted. "With Satellite QKD capability, India holds the potential to become a world leader in creating Quantum Secure Communication Network", the statement said. "The outcome of this collaboration shall ensure that India leads the future of global quantum communication networks that will involve a combination of the quantum-satellite constellation,

Chinese astronauts meet colleagues in space; makes country's first

Three Chinese astronauts aboard a spacecraft that docked with China's under-construction space station met with their colleagues on Wednesday, making it the country's first gathering of six astronauts in space. China on Tuesday successfully launched the spacecraft carrying three astronauts, Fei Junlong, Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu, to its space station. The Shenzhou-15 spaceship, atop the Long March-2F Y15 carrier rocket, blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Tuesday night, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). The three space station occupants greeted the new three-member crew with warm hugs and then they took a group picture after the successful docking, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The space reunion kicked off the first in-orbit crew rotation in China's space station, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). The six astronauts are scheduled to live and work together for about five days to complete planned

Last total lunar eclipse of the year enthrals stargazers across world

Stargazers across the country were treated to a visual delight as the earth cast its shadow on the moon in the last total lunar eclipse of the year on Tuesday. Northeastern parts of the country such as Agartala, Kohima, and Guwahati were able to catch a glimpse of maximum obscuration of the lunar disc as the moon had already risen on the eastern horizon before the end of the totality phase at 5:12 pm. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the earth casts its shadow completely over a full moon, blocking reflection of all direct sunlight from the lunar orb and dimming the colour of the moon to a reddish hue. From most parts of India, stargazers could observe a partial lunar eclipse only as the moon rise timings across the country were during or after the total phase. Astronomy enthusiasts and star gazing clubs had set up telescopes across cities to watch the celestial phenomenon unfold. In Delhi, smog-filled sky denied stargazers the opportunity to view the eclipse at moon-rise and a ha

Global space cooperation integral part of Indian space programme: Offficial

Global space cooperation is an integral part of India's space programme, a top Indian space scientist has said and supported the idea of nations coming together to replicate the International Space Station for another outpost in space. In this entire journey of the Indian space programme, global space cooperation has always been an integral part, Krunal Joshi who is currently a counsellor, Space (ISRO) at the Embassy of India told a recent ASCEND Conference. Participating in two-panel discussions at the prestigious ASCEND conference, hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in Las Vegas from October 24 to October 26, Joshi told the space scientific community that India has launched more than 350 satellites from 33 countries. In the 1960s, India dedicated Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station to the UN and a variety of research and launch experiments were done from here. India today has more than 230 agreements with over 55 countries and five ...
