Domestic steel vacuum bottle makers urge govt to check imports from China

The All India Steel Bottle Association (AISBA) has urged the government to take immediate measures to check the imports of sub-standard and cheap steel vacuum flasks into India. The imports of vacuum steel bottles from China and other countries are on the rise and the country has seen a 35 per cent increase in imports of the product from 2019-20 to 2022-23, the industry body said citing an official data. Bharat Agarwal, Treasurer of AISBA, also suggested the government not to extend import relaxation under a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) order which restricts quality approvals to such products beyond January 14, 2024. As per the order, he said, "January 14 is the last date by when the products getting imported are to be approved by the BIS". The products are not as per the BIS standards, hence the government must not extend the relaxation considering the issues faced by local manufacturers who have invested around Rs 1,500 crore in the Indian market, he said. "We have also not

Govt envisions PLI 2.0 for steel sector in 2024; curbs on imports awaited

The government is working on Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme 2.0 as well as looking at ways to ensure adequate raw material supply for the steel sector in 2024, according to Union minister Faggan Singh Kulaste. While a robust economic growth will increase the demand for steel, industry players remain concerned about rising imports and high raw material prices amid geopolitical uncertainties. Production and consumption of steel have shown a strong recovery after the coronavirus pandemic that impacted the sector in 2020-21. During the April-November period this year, the cumulative production of crude steel was 94.01 Million Tonnes (MT), up 14.5 per cent year-on-year. The consumption of finished steel jumped 14 per cent to 86.97 MT on an annual basis during the same period, as per data from the steel ministry. India has set a target of having an installed steel manufacturing capacity of 300 MT by 2030. At present, the country has a capacity of around 161 MT. "We are prepari

India's steel import to be elevated at 6MT in FY24 on strong demand: CRISIL

India imported 4.26 MT finished steel in April- November 2023 and the import may touch 6 MT mark in the current fiscal mainly on account of strong domestic demand, according to a report by Crisil. The report comes at a time when steel players are registering strong concerns of surging imports. Global steel demand, which has been subdued since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, is expected to grow 1.6 per cent in 2023, after a sharp fall of 3.3 per cent in 2022, the global analytics company said. The tepid rate of growth rides largely on a buoyant 13 per cent growth in demand in India, which has bucked the trend so far, Crisil said. This fiscal, the steel sector in India is poised to clock its third consecutive year of double-digit growth at 11-13 per cent after growing 11.4 per cent and 13.4 per cent in fiscals 2022 and 2023, respectively. "Strong domestic demand, supported by government spending on infrastructure, building and construction segments, is expected to keep Ind

Tata Steel CEO expresses concern over India's rising steel imports

India being a net importer of steel is a matter of concern, Tata Steel CEO & MD T V Narendran said Tuesday. The government has assured of intervention, if the imports remain on a rise, Narendran said at the ISA Steel Conclave event in the national capital. "I think it's a little bit of a concern because internationally steel prices are still a bit soft because of China... You heard the (commerce) minister Piyush Goyal saying that if imports increase the government will look at what it can do to help us," he said replying to a question on India being net importer of steel in October. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday assured the domestic industry that India will not accept such unfair taxes and will fight to get a fair deal for producers and exporters. Govt looking into dumping issue of certain steel products: Steel Secy

The government is looking into issues surrounding dumping of certain categories of steel products into the Indian market, Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha said on Tuesday. The statement comes amid the industry raising concerns over the rise in steel imports. In October India remained the net importer of steel. The Ministry of Finance is looking at dumping issues of certain categories of steel products and will take a final call on the anti-dumping duty, Sinha told reporters at the '4rth ISA Steel Conclave' event here. India's steel capacity crosses 161 MT mark, sector poised for growth: Govt

India's steel capacity has crossed 161 million tonnes and the industry is poised for continued growth, Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha said on Tuesday. As per the National Steel Policy, India has an ambitious target of installing 300 MT steel capacity by 2030. "We have already crossed 161 million mt of capacity, comprising 67 MT by blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BoF) route, 36 MT by electric arc furnace (EAF) and 58 MT by induction furnace (IF) route," Sinha said addressing the '4rth Indian Steel Association (ISA) Steel Conclave' event in the national capital. He further stressed that the steel sector in India is poised for continued growth. Sinha said, India is the world's fourth-largest automobile market, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8-10 per cent over the next 10 years. Moreover, the manufacturing sector saw a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7-8 per cent and this is driving demand for steel in both the sectors. The production-linked incentive scheme

Rs 47 trn required to decarbonise country's steel, cement plants: Study

India's existing steel and cement plants, which play a vital role in the country's economic development, will require Rs 47 lakh crore in additional capital expenditure (CAPEX) to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, according to a new study. India is the second-largest producer of steel and cement in the world. But both are emission-intensive processes making these hard-to-abate industries. The study, the first-of-its-kind calculation of the cost of decarbonising these industries, also pointed out these two sectors will need Rs 1 lakh crore each year in additional operational expenditure (OPEX) to achieve net zero. Net zero means achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere and those taken out. The analysis by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) also found that an 8 to 25 per cent reduction in steel emissions and a 32 per cent reduction in cement emissions is possible without any price increase by adopting efficient technologies such as ..

Proposals formulated for 2nd edition of PLI, will take time: Steel secy

Steel Secretary Nagendra Nath Sinha on Thursday said the ministry has formulated proposals in consultation with the industry for second edition of the PLI scheme but its implementation would take "some time" as a few processes, including Cabinet nod, are pending. The Union Cabinet in July 2021 approved the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to boost the production of specialty steel in India. "We have formulated proposals for PLI 2 and need approval of the government for this. It may take some time. The proposal we have formulated has been done in consultation with all players of the industry and if we take it up, we expect a good response," Sinha said on the sidelines of an industry event in Greater Noida. "I cannot commit any time frame for this right now because a lot of processes, like the proposal being sent to powered group of secretaries and then to the Cabinet for approval, are due and it will take some time," the Steel Secretary told reporters. There is no freeze on the disinvestment process of RINL, the Steel Ministry clarified on Friday. Clarifying some media reports regarding the hold on the disinvestment process of the state-owned steel maker, the ministry, in a statement, said that the disinvestment process of RINL is in progress. "There is no freeze on the disinvestment process of RINL," the statement said. However, efforts are being made by the company to improve the performance of RINL, it added. Under the Ministry of Steel, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam owns and operates a steel plant with an annual capacity of about 7 million tonnes (MT) located at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. RINL's Vizag steel plant is the country's first shore-based plant where the company manufactures various special products. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on January 27, 2021, gave its 'in-principle' approval for 100 per cent disinvestment of the government stake in RINL, also called Visakhapatnam Steel Plant or Vizag Steel
