Congress appoints B Mahesh Kumar Goud as Telangana unit's president

The Congress on Friday appointed B Mahesh Kumar Goud as president of its Telangana unit, replacing A Revanth Reddy. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Goud as president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect, a statement issued by AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC president A Revanth Reddy. The appointment comes days after Congress president Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu and discussed organisational changes in the state. Though there had been no official word on the meeting's agenda, it was understood that deliberations were held about the selection of a new Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president. Reddy had remained president of the Congress in Telangana even after becoming chief minister at the end of last year.

Telangana govt orders to provide free electricity in govt edu institutions

The Telangana government on Thursday issued an order providing free power supply to government educational institutions in the state to impart quality education. The scheme will into effect immediately, the Government Order (GO) said. According to the modalities for the scheme's implementation, the DISCOMS (power distribution companies) will create an online portal with logins given to respective departments of all the government educational institutions of Telangana. The secretaries of the concerned departments would finalise the list of institutions to be covered in the scheme and include the same on the online portal. Monthly billing will be done for each institution and will be displayed in the departments' login. The portal would also enable generation of reports pertaining to the consumption, bill amount, historical consumption, billing, payments and others. Tension eases in Telangana town after protest over rape sparks tension

The situation in Jainoor town in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district remained peaceful on Thursday a day after a protest by tribal organisations against an autorickshaw driver's alleged attempt to rape and murder a tribal woman sparked communal tension prompting authorities to impose a curfew. In an ecological disaster, an estimated 50,000 trees spread over about 500 acres in the forests of Mulugu district in Telangana were uprooted following a huge gale and a sudden cloud burst. This happened on the night of August 31 because of local climatic conditions that suddenly developed there due to cloud formation, a senior forest official said on Wednesday. "We never saw such an incident in our lives," the official told PTI. With the massive wind and water gushing (in a particular width and length), it has destroyed the forest and big trees have been uprooted, he said. The other reason why the trees got uprooted was that the plants do not develop a very deep root system as moisture and nutrition are easily available for them in the area, he said. The Telangana Government has released an assessment report on the damages caused by heavy rains and floods in the state recently.Based on initial estimates, the total loss is Rs 5438 crore, as per the report released by the Telangana CMO on Monday.The losses have been estimated as -- Roads and Building Department -Rs 2,362 crore. The Telangana government on Monday stepped up relief measures following heavy rains in the state which led to the death of at least nine people and inundation of low-lying areas.
