The Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) launched a project on Tuesday to develop 22,000 books in Indian languages in the next five years. The project, titled ASMITA (Augmenting Study Materials in Indian Languages through Translation and Academic Writing), was launched by Sanjay Murthy, Secretary, Higher Education, and it will be a collaborative effort of the UGC and the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a high-powered committee under the ministry, to promote Indian languages in education. "This project aims to create a robust ecosystem for translation and original book writing in Indian languages across various disciplines within higher education. The goal is to produce 1,000 books in 22 languages within five years, resulting in 22,000 books in Bharatiya bhasha," UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said. The Centre's high-level panel on examination reforms has sought suggestions and feedback from stakeholders, including students and parents, till July 7, Ministry of Education officials said on Friday. Amid a raging row on alleged irregularities in exams, the panel headed by former ISRO chief R Radhakrishnan has been tasked with making recommendations on reforms in the examination process, enhancing data security protocols, and reviewing the structure and operations of the National Testing Agency (NTA). Days after the University Grants Commission termed 16 universities from Madhya Pradesh defaulters for failing to appoint ombudsmen to address student grievances, one of them called the move unfortunate and said they have already complied with the requirement. Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (MCU) said it has appointed retired Chief District and Sessions Judge Om Prakash Sunarya as its adjudicator (ombudsman). MCU appointed Sunarya as ombudsman for three years from the date of his joining after following UGC guidelines, the varsity said in a statement. Sunarya was appointed the ombudsman on June 6 and he took charge the next day, it said. "If Indian universities can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students such as those who missed admission to a university in the July-August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons," Kumar told PTI.
