Maruti Suzuki applies for Bharat-NCAP safety ratings for some vehicles

Maruti Suzuki has applied for Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat-NCAP) safety ratings for some of its vehicles, a senior government official has said. Last year, Tata Motors' SUVs Safari and Harrier became the first recipients of the safety rating for adult and child occupant protection as per Bharat-NCAP. The SUVs were given 5-star rating. In August last year, the government launched Bharat-NCAP, India's very own and independent safety performance evaluation protocol for automobiles. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier said Bharat-NCAP is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations. The official also said the government is considering changing highway construction measurement method to 'lane km' from 'road km' in the current financial year as the government's focus has now shifted to building more expressways that are of at least fou

PV volume to rise by 5-7%, touch new peak in next fiscal: CRISIL report

Passenger vehicle (PV) volumes are expected to log 5-7 per cent growth, touching a new peak for the third straight time in the next fiscal driven by the SUV segment, credit rating agency Crisil said on Monday. This anticipated growth is expected to come on the back of an estimated high base of 6-8 per this financial year even as demand for cars and exports remain muted, it said. A significant change in consumer preference has cranked up demand for SUVs leading to its market share doubling to around 60 per cent of total domestic volume this fiscal from around 28 per cent before the pandemic in fiscal 2019, the ratings agency said. This preference is expected to grow further, backed by a healthy pipeline of new model launches across price points, including electric variants, and normalised availability of semiconductors after a prolonged period of short supply, it said. "While the overall PV volume is seen rising 5-7 per cent next fiscal, we expect demand for SUVs to accelerate at .

Hyundai and Kia recall nearly 3.4 million vehicles due to fire risk

Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 3.4 million vehicles in the U.S. and telling owners to park them outside due to the risk of engine compartment fires. The recalls cover multiple car and SUV models from the 2010 through 2019 model years including Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV and Kia's Sorrento SUV. Documents posted Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the anti-lock brake control module can leak fluid and cause an electrical short, which can touch off a fire while the vehicles are parked or being driven. The automakers are advising owners to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are done. Dealers will replace the anti-lock brake fuse at no cost to owners. Kia says in documents that it will send notification letters to owners starting Nov. 14. For Hyundai the date is Nov. 21. Hyundai reported 21 fires in the affected vehicles in the U.S., and another 22 thermal incidents including smoke, burning and melting of parts, the documents say.

Govt extends mandatory fitness testing of vehicles via ATS till Oct

The government has extended the date of mandatory fitness testing through a registered automated testing station for transport vehicles by five months to October 1. In April last year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said that heavy, medium and light goods and passenger vehicles should mandatorily be vetted at automated testing stations from June 1, 2024, onwards. "The date for mandatory testing is now notified as 1st October 2024. "It is also mandated that fitness testing of the vehicle shall be done only through automated testing stations," the MoRTH said in a statement. An automated testing station (ATS) uses mechanical equipment to automate the various tests required to check the fitness of a vehicle. In 2021, the ministry said entities like special purpose vehicles, state governments, companies, associations and bodies of individuals may be allowed to open ATS for testing the fitness of both personal and transport vehicles.
