What is France Football Team?

France's national football team represents the country in the international men’s football tournaments. The French team is the reigning world champions. They won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, making it their second world cup title. One of the biggest football powerhouses in the world, France is the only team other than Brazil to have participated in every World Cup cycle since the first in 1930. France was also the first national team to win all the three major men’s titles recognized by the world football governing body FIFA — the World Cup, the Confederations Cup, and the Olympic tournament.

The team comes under the French Football Federation (FFF) in France. It also comes under the global jurisdiction of the Federation of International Football Federations (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) in Europe. The team is managed by Didier Deschamps, a former French international player who captained the national team to World Cup and Euro title in 1998 and 2000, respectively. As a player, he has also won one UEFA Champions League title and many national league titles in France and Italy. In his managerial career, he has led many clubs to various titles and trophies. In 2012, he was appointed as the manager of the French national team. He has led the national team to the final of the Euro 2016 and won the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The national team is captained by Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. The team plays its home matches at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Île-de-France.

The national team dons blue, white, and red colours. The team is commonly known as Les Bleus (The Blues) and coq gaulois is the national team symbol.

History of France national football team

The team was formed in 1904 and it played the first official international match against Belgium, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. In 1908, a rival football federation to the then football federation was formed. Later in 1919, this rival federation transformed itself to French Football Federation and the original federation merged with the FFF in 1921.

In 1930, the French team participated in the World Cup in Uruguay. The first-ever world cup match was played between France and Mexico. The match was won by the French team. However, defeats against Argentina and Chile led to its exit from the tournament in the group stage.

France at the FIFA World Cup

The team has participated in 15 World Cups and is one of the only eight teams to have won the world title at least once. The French team won the title for the first time in 1998 and the second in 2018. In 2006, the French team lost in the final against Italy. The match is also remembered for France’s star player Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt against an Italian player.

France at the UEFA European Championship

France has won two European titles, one short of the all-time high of Germany and Spain. The first European Championship tournament was held in France in 1960 and since then the les bleus have appeared in 9 European Championships. The team won its first title in 1984 with Ballon d'Or winner Michel Platini, and the second was in 2000 when the team was led by FIFA World Player of Year Zidane.

Euro Cup 2020

The team has qualified for the 2020 Euro Cup, making it the 10th European campaign for the French.
