What is PMSMA scheme?

Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2016 to help pregnant women get comprehensive and quality Antenatal Care (ANC) free of cost.
The scheme aims to provide routine ANC services by Obstetrician-Gynaecologists, Radiologists and Physicians to pregnant women, especially for those in 2nd and 3rd trimesters in government health centres in urban and rural areas.

  • Provides counselling services and documentation to pregnant women.
  • Under PMSMA, state governments provide nutritional supplements to women at health centres.
  • Birth planning, complication readiness and identification of risk factors/comorbid conditions, are also part of the scheme.

Benefits of the scheme
  • PMSMA provides access to ANC services on the 9th of every month to pregnant women.
  • Helps in the timely detection of pregnancy-related risks.
  • Provides birth preparedness counselling, promotes institutional delivery and Postpartum Family Planning ( PPFP ).
