The students asked Rahul Gandhi to support their agitation against the implementation of OBC quota in the Central institutions, particularly at post-graduate level. "YFE also requested him to come and address the students who are on hunger strike protesting the quotas," Kumar Harsh, president, YFE and the AIIMS Resident Doctors Association, said.
According to YFE, about 100 students from various medical colleges, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Indraprastha have been sitting on hunger strike for six days.
"Though he did not giv any assurance, Rahul Gandhi said that he would take up the matter with higher authorities," Harsh said.
"We are now protesting because the government is not implementing the Supreme Court order in true spirit. Though the apex court has ruled that graduates should be kept out of the ambit of OBC reservation, the government is extending reservations to them as well," Harsh said.
Our dissatisfaction is also because these 27 per cent OBC reservations are being given when there is no basis pointing to their exact proportion in the country after 1931 census, he said.
Pointing to the Gujjar agitation, Harsh said,"Look at what is happening now . When we have to move upwards and developed, some communities are asking to include them in more backward categories. This is what happens when reservations are given just because of community we come from."
The Supreme Court in its last months' ruling gave a go ahead to the OBC reservation in CEIs like IIT, IIMs and central universities like JNU and DU but wanted the creamy layer to be kept out from availing reservations.
