Maruti Suzuki Swift and Datsun Go Fails Global NCAP Crash Test

Maruti Suzuki Swift and Datsun Go fail recent crash test conducted by Global NCAP. The crash test was done at the speed of 64kmph where Maruti’s Swift received zero star ratings while Datsun Go scored two-star ratings, slightly better than Swift. According to agency, the crash-test dummies showed near fatal injuries.

Global NCAP is an independent agency which provides vehicle safety rating based on car’s performance in several crash tests which include front impact, side impact and pole impact.

At the crash test, two variants of Swift were tested- one which is been sold in Indian auto sector and the other which is exported to Latin America. In the exported model, airbags and ABS are standard while the Indian base variant lacks these safety features. In the Global NCAP testing, its mandatory that even the base variants must carry airbags and ABS, so basically both the cars were disqualified or say failed the test even before the test.

Global NCAP chairman Max Mosley said, "India has the potential to be a world leader in the automobile industry,but Indian consumers are not aware of how unsafe they are in case of a crash. It is critical for the safety of the passenger. We are pleased that India is launching an NCAP consumer testing programme. If this happens, every new car sold in India would have a proper crash structure and airbags."

Earlier in January, other small cars such as Tata Nano, Maruti Suzuki's Alto 800 and Hyundai i10 failed to clear Global NCAP's crash tests.
