Senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh today lashed out at Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Badal for allegedly unleashing a reign of terror to win the Talwandi Sabo Assembly bypoll "by hook or by crook" and claim it to be their great victory.
"How great is this victory everybody across Punjab knows," the Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha said, while asking the Badals that instead of gloating over a "stage managed victory" they should apologise to the people of Punjab for "hijacking" the electoral process.
"What you did at Talwandi Sabo on August 21 used to happen in Bihar long time back," the former chief minister said.
"If you were so confident about your popularity then why did you need to fortify Talwandi Sabo with men, muscle and money," Singh asked the SAD leaders.
Reacting to Badals' reported statement that the bypoll result had shown that Congress was on decline, he retorted that his party was "never on decline in Punjab and will never ever be so".
He reminded the Badals that the Patiala bye-election result will mark the beginning of the end for the Akalis the same way Adampur bypoll started their countdown in 1999.
The prestigious Patiala (urban) constituency was won by Perneet Kaur, wife of Amarinder Singh, who had vacated it after winning the Lok Sabha election from Amritsar.
SAD won the Talwandi Sabo Assembly seat defeating nearest Congress rival Harminder Singh Jassi.
