Take preventive action to check rape cases: Haryana DGP

The directive comes after dozen cases of rape were reported in the state within a month. Two days ago, a teenage Dalit girl immolated herself after allegedly being gangraped in Jind district.

The DGP said all possible steps were being taken by Haryana Police "to provide full protection to women in the state."

The Haryana government had on Thursday formed a three-member committee at district level to investigate, monitor and ensure speedy prosecution of such crimes.

Dalal said the state government had constituted district level committees for speedy trial of rape cases.

Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Samir Mathur today said the state government has decided to launch a campaign to curb incidents of crime with focus on crimes against women.

Meanwhile, Haryana's main opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) lashed out at the Hooda government alleging that ever since it has come to power in 2005, "the number of rape cases have witnessed a sharp increase".

"According to Crime Records Bureau figures, after Hooda government was formed, there has been increase by 59 per cent in rape cases while cases of kidnapping have increased by 113 per cent," INLD Secretary General Ajay Singh Chautala told a party meeting in Hisar.
