Three years after the renaming of the Aurangabad city in Maharashtra, the Central Railway on Saturday said the Aurangabad railway station has been officially renamed as "Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station." Its new station code will be 'CPSN', the Central Railway said in a release. The station falls under the Nanded Division of South Central Railway. The BJP-led Mahayuti government on October 15 had issued a gazette notification to change the name of the Aurangabad railway station. The move came nearly three years after the then government headed by Eknath Shinde formally renamed Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The city, previously named for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, received the new name as a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and second ruler of the Maratha state. The Reserve Bank on Tuesday said it has cancelled the licence of Ajantha Urban Co-operative Bank Maryadit, Aurangabad, as the lender does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on Tuesday (April 22, 2025), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra, has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank. On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakh from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC). As per the data submitted by the bank, the RBI said 91.55 per cent of the depositors are entitled to receiving full amount of their deposits from DICGC. Authorities have distributed smart cards to nearly 650 inmates from the Harsul Central Jail in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city to help them stay in touch with their family members and lawyers, an official said on Wednesday. The smart cards will allow the inmates to make three free calls, each for six minutes, a week, a district official said in a release. Many families cannot come to meet their prisoner relatives in jail due to financial conditions. Therefore, to connect the prisoners with their families (and lawyers), smart cards have been provided to 650 prisoners at Harsul jail, the release said. However, the release did not specify if the inmates can call only those numbers shared in advance with the jail authorities or any number they choose. The facility calling booth has been made available on the prison premises for the prisoners as well as those under judicial custody, it said. The Harsul correctional set-up is one of the nine central jails in Maharashtra.
The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government has issued a notification on the change of names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively. The suggestions and objections sought a few months ago have been considered and the decision to change the names at the sub-division, village, taluka and district levels has been taken, the notification issued by the Revenue Department on Friday night said. The decision to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad was taken in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government's last cabinet meeting chaired by the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on June 29, 2022 just before he resigned. However, Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who were sworn in a day later, had said the Thackeray-led dispensation's decision to rename these places was illegal as it was taken by it after the governor had asked it to prove majority in the state assembly. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said an electric vehicle facility and an EV battery manufacturing unit in Pune and Aurangabad, respectively, are among the Rs 40,000 crore worth of projects sanctioned by the state government. Talking to reporters here, Shinde said the EV and battery manufacturing units will come up with an investment of Rs 12,482 crore. He said a private company, Gogora India Pvt Ltd, will set up 12,000 battery swapping stations across the state in the next few years. A battery swapping station is a place where EV owners can quickly exchange their empty battery with a fully charged one. The CM said these projects will provide a boost to the fast-growing EV sector.

Aurangabad in Maharashtra on Friday reported 69 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 1,70,508, while the death toll remained unchanged at 3,736, a health official said. Of the new cases, 40 are from the city and 29 are from rural areas of the district, he added. The active caseload of the district is 359, of which 333 are in home isolation, the official informed. The recovery count increased by 19 during the day to touch 1,66,413, he said.
