A ton-up Shubman Gill on Friday said not playing to the occasion brings out the best in Gujarat Titans as his side qualified for the final of IPL 2026 with a commanding seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals here. Gill smacked 104 off 53 balls with 15 fours and three sixes to eclipse the first-innings heroics of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made a calculated 96, to power Gujarat Titans' victory in the Qualifier 2 here. "(The) feeling is really good. But (a) quick turnaround so tomorrow (Saturday) we'll just rest and recover and then go there and assess conditions," Gill told the broadcaster after the match here. "If you don't play the occasion it brings the best out of us and that's what we spoke about. Let's take the occasion out and play some good cricket. Whether we win or lose, we should play good cricket," he said while revealing GT's mantra. The IPL final this year will be a repeat of the Qualifier 1 in which defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru had beaten Gujarat Tit
Gujarat Titans director of cricket Vikram Solanki has been blown away by the form and consistency his captain Shubman Gill has shown in the Indian Premier League. Gill has totalled 722 runs this season, scoring the bulk of the runs for his team alongside opening partner Sai Sudharsan (710). Both are operating at a healthy strike rate of 160. Gill gave a batting masterclass in his team's chase of 215 on Friday, steering the Titans to their third final in five seasons. Gill, the Test and ODI captain for India, was dropped from the T20 side ahead of the World Cup earlier this year. Considering his appetite for runs in the shortest format, Gill seems determined for a national comeback. "It is on the back of a lot of hard work. I can only imagine all of the work that Shubman has put in throughout his career to get to where he is as far as batting is concerned. He's an exceptional young man, and sometimes you have to realise he is still a young man. To be playing the cricket that he is,
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has recovered from the muscle spasm that forced him to miss the previous game and will take the field against Delhi Capitals in the IPL here on Wednesday. Gill's opening partner Sai Sudharsan confirmed that the former is fit to play. "He is absolutely fine and will play," said Sudharsan on the eve of the game. Titans have been tagged as a top heavy batting side. The middle order in the last game was unable to do the job after the launch pad provided by Sudharsan. The left-hander said the team firmly believes in the middle order comprising Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips. "If someone from the top three batters plays longer, it's always a great thing for the team. We believe in our middle order. This is the team which played last year and we qualified. So it's just two games and I and the whole team believes that our middle order will win games," he said. The way T20 cricket is going, Sudharsan feels one has to evolve as a batter every six .
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill said his side's failure to capitalise in the final five overs while batting proved decisive, as Punjab Kings outplayed them in their Indian Premier League opener here on Tuesday. Gill's side, despite boasting a formidable batting line-up featuring Jos Buttler, Sai Sudharsan and Glenn Phillips, could not capitalise on a fairly good batting surface, managing only 162 for 6, and the skipper later admitted that a total in the range of 210220 was achievable on the wicket. Punjab Kings' Cooper Connolly made batting look effortless on the same surface, producing a fluent 72. "It looked like a 210-220 wicket. We thought 175 would be a good score, but we kept losing wickets and didn't score much in the last five overs," conceded Gill after the three-wicket loss. "Once the ball got older, it was difficult to hit it down the ground," he added. Gill said that batting became easier later on, as a drizzle set in and the wet ball made it easier for the home ..
Gujarat Titans batting coach Matthew Hayden has lauded skipper Shubman Gill for his growth as a batter and leader, saying the India star's clarity of thought and modern-day confidence have shaped his evolution at the highest level. GT will face Punjab Kings in their IPL 2026 opener here on Tuesday. "Yeah, see, Shubman is a very clear speaker of the game, and that says he knew cricket in good stead, obviously at the highest level of cricket and Test cricket," Hayden said. "He brings a lot of confidence. If you like, he brings a bit of swagger of the modern generation, which I really enjoy, that feeling that he's in control and he's shaping himself and his own destiny. "But any side that he'll play with, he very unselfishly says, and I've watched him across many different press conferences like this, that it's very team-orientated," the burly opener of yesteryears said on Monday. The former Australia opener, who is currently the batting coach of Gujarat Titans, also expressed confid
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill on Wednesday became the latest Indian cricketer to criticise the Impact Player rule in the IPL, saying "it takes the skill out of the game". The other Indian players who have expressed their concerns over the rule include Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and more recently Delhi Capitals' skipper Axar Patel. In the IPL captains meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday, majority of the leaders including Gill had sought a review of the rule that BCCI introduced in 2023 before extending it at least until 2027. A day later Gill did not mince his words when asked about his thoughts on the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to play an extra batter or bowler in any stage of the game. "Personally for me, I don't think there should be an impact player. I think cricket in general is an 11 players' game and on wickets where we play on the grounds that we play, adding an extra batsman is I think it takes the skill out of the game," said Gill, who leads India in Tests an
India's ODI skipper, Shubman Gill, said on Sunday that winning the 2027 World Cup is the ultimate goal for his team, especially after coming so close to lifting the trophy in the last edition of the 50-over event. Despite their incredible 10-match winning streak, India lost in the final against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup. "Definitely, it does. That is the ultimate goal," Gill said on Star Sports during the BCCI Naman Awards when asked if he thinks about the next ODI World Cup. "We felt like we were so close last time when we were here in (the final) in India. To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it's going to be a great opportunity for us." "Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal so obviously, that is something that sometimes runs in my mind," Gill said. Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, said if there was a game that he would want to replay was the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and win it. "Definitely, (the) 2023 World Cup final a
India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is set to be named Cricketer of the Year at the BCCI's annual awards to be held here on March 15. The 26-year-old, who was not picked in the T20 side that defended the World Cup crown last month, enjoyed a stellar run in the other two formats. He amassed 983 runs in Tests, including a whopping 754 in the drawn away series against England in 2025, at average of over 70. His ODI runs tally stood at 490, including 188 runs during India's title-winning Champions Trophy campaign . Overall, Gill accumulated 1,764 runs across formats at an average of 49, dotted with seven centuries and three fifties. Although his T20 International form was not particularly impressive, he was in tremendous form during the IPL, scoring 650 runs for Gujarat Titans at an average of 50. Former India head coach Rahul Dravid is set to be honored with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for his monumental contribution to Indian cricket, including guiding the te
