Retail sales of vehicles across categories in India in 2025-26 grew by 13.3 per cent at a record 2,96,71,064 units as compared to 2,61,87,255 units in the previous fiscal, with GST 2.0 helping overcome a subdued start to the year, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said on Monday. Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales rose to 47,05,056 units in FY26, up 13 per cent from 41,63,927 units in FY25, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said in a statement, adding that it is cautiously optimistic but watchful of the possible impact of West Asia war on vehicles demand in India going forward. Similarly, two-wheeler (2W) sales also grew by 13.4 per cent at 2,14,20,386 in 2025-26 as compared to 1,88,89,595 units in 2024-25. JSW MG Motor India on Wednesday reported a 19 per cent year-on-year rise in dispatches to dealers at 6,528 units in March. The wholesales for March reflected sustained momentum across its internal combustion engine (ICE) and new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolios, JSW MG Motor India said in a statement. The company said it will hike prices on the MG SELECT portfolio by up to 7 per cent, effective April 1, 2026, including flagship models such as the MG Cyberster and MG M9. Already, the company has announced a price increase of up to 2 per cent across its MG portfolio, effective April 1, 2026.
Hero MotoCorp on Friday said its dispatches to dealers declined 43 per cent to 3,05,406 units in April hit by a three-day production pause at four plants. The company dispatched 5,33,585 units to dealers in April last year. Domestic sales declined to 288,524 units last month, down from 5,13,296 units in April last year. Exports stood at 16,882 units last month as against 20,289 units in the year-ago period. The company said it recorded 5.05 lakh registrations for its internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers in April. The company has maintained a consistent month-on-month increase in retail market share throughout 2025, it added. As part of a planned operational strategy, the company implemented a temporary production halt from April 17-19 at its Dharuhera, Gurugram, Haridwar, and Neemrana facilities to facilitate supply chain alignment and conduct scheduled maintenance and infrastructure enhancements; normalisation is anticipated in May, it said.
Tata Motors Ltd on Thursday reported a 6.1 per cent decline in overall sales to 72,753 units in April 2025. The company posted the total sales at 77,521 units during April 2024. Total domestic sales were down 7 per cent to 70,963 units last month as compared to 76,399 units in April 2024, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Total passenger vehicle (PV) sales, including EVs, were down 5 per cent at 45,532 units over 47,983 units in the year-ago period, it added. Sales of PVs, including EVs, in the domestic market were down 6 per cent at 45,199 units against 47,883 units in the corresponding month last year. The company said its total commercial vehicle (CV) sales last month were at 27,221 units from 29,538 units in April 2024, down 8 per cent.
Domestic CV volumes are expected to touch 1 million units mark this fiscal, the pre-pandemic peak logged in FY19, driven by accelerating infrastructure execution, replacement demand and policy support from the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, ratings agency Crisil said on Wednesday. The sector's credit outlook remains stable, supported by strong liquidity and healthy cash flows, it said. The volume growth will be led by light commercial vehicles (LCVs), which are expected to account for around 62 per cent of total volume on account of rising penetration of e-commerce and warehousing. A pickup in freight-intensive sectors such as cement and mining will boost the overall demand, it said. Premium electric two-wheeler maker Ultraviolette plans to invest up to USD 100 million (nearly Rs 870 crore) in the next three to four years to fuel growth, including expansion of product portfolio, manufacturing and network, according to its founders. The company, which announced plans to bring ten new products, including scooters and long-range cruiser bikes, in the next three years, is targetting annual sales of 1 lakh units in this period, with presence not just in India but also in Europe and South East Asia, Ultraviolette CEO & Co-founder Narayan Subramaniam, and CTO & Co-founder Niraj Rajmohan told PTI. Maruti Suzuki India on Saturday reported a marginal year-on-year increase in total sales at 1,99,400 units in February. The company sold a total of 1,97,471 units in the same month last year, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement. Total domestic passenger vehicle sales were at 1,60,791 units last month as compared with 1,60,271 units in the year-ago month, a marginal year-on-year growth, it added. Sales of mini segment cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, declined to 10,226 units as against 14,782 units in same month last year. Sales of compact cars, including Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, rose to 72,942 units as compared to 71,627 units in the year-ago month. Passenger vehicle sales volume in India is expected to grow at a moderate pace of 4-7 per cent in FY26 with most demand drivers remaining neutral or favourable, according to ratings agency Icra. As for two-wheelers, Icra said it estimates the industry volumes to grow at a healthy pace of 6-9 per cent in FY26, following an estimated 11-14 per cent growth in FY25. Passenger vehicle (PV) industry volumes reached an all-time high of 4.2 million units in FY24. In year-to-date (YTD) FY25, wholesale volumes remained stable led by steady production by automobile manufacturers but the industry volume growth has been modest at about 2 per cent against the backdrop of waning replacement demand and high inventory levels, Icra said in a statement.
