The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has approved the appointment of Ashok Chawla, former head of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), as new chairman of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Chawla will replace S B Mathur, who has stepped down upon completing his tenure. Chawla’s appointment is effective from May 3 and is valid till March 27, 2019.
Prior to joining NSE, Chawla was a civil servant with over 40 years of experience in various sectors in India and in international agencies.
He has a Masters degree from the Delhi School of Economics and was an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1973 cadre. He started his career in Gujarat and held various positions, including chief executive of important state-owned enterprises.
