The annual general meeting of the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) will be held in Chennai on March 2, 2015.

An emergent meeting of the working committee of the BCCI held today here decided to hold the AGM on March 2. The AGM is significant considering the elections for the top positions in the board are likely to be held in the meeting.

“The committee has discussed the implications of the Supreme Court judgement and decided to act as per legal advise,” said a release issued by the BCCI.

The board also decided to increase the monthly gratis scheme for all former cricketers by 50 per cent, subject to a maximum of Rs 50,000 a month, effective from January 2015. It may be noted the Supreme Court has asked the BCCI to hold elections within six weeks from the date of the order on condition that no one who has any commercial interest in the BCCI events (including N Srinivasan) shall be eligible for contesting the elections for any post whatsoever.

The deadline, according to the order, for conducting the AGM falls in the first week of March. It has been much debated whether N Srinivasan, will contest in the elections.

The apex court, while convicting Srinivasan’s son-in-law G Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, who was managing the Rajasthan Royals IPL team, also observed the charges of alleged cover-up by Srinivasan had not been proved.

The court’s observation came as a respite to Srinivasan, but the order also questioned the conflict of interest in the BCCI president owning an IPL team. The court observed India Cements, which is the owner of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team, promoted by N Srinivasan and his family, has created a conflict of interest.

Even before this, India Cements had initiated the process of hiving off the IPL franchise to a wholly-owned subsidiary.

With the deadline for the AGM nearing, the company has informed the stock exchanges that it had completed the required documentation for transfer of its IPL franchise CSK to a wholly-owned subsidiary Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd.

The board of directors of the company would consider reorganisation proposals relating to the subsidiary at a meeting on February 11. With this, speculations are that the India Cements vice chairman Srinivasan would look at offloading the IPL franchise and contest for the elections.

Sources privy to the BCCI said the nomination for contesting the top post of BCCI could be submitted even a day before the AGM, and it is learnt Srinivasan could hive off the IPL franchise before the meet.
