DATA STORY: India administers over 5 mn doses; caseload tops 30 mn-mark

India on Wednesday reported a net reduction of 19,327 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 643,194. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 5.67 per cent (one in 17). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Tuesday, it added 50,848 cases to take its total caseload to 30,028,709 from 29,977,861 — an increase of 0.2%. And, with 1,358 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 390,660, or 1.30 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 5,424,374 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Tuesday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 294,639,511. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 28,994,855 – or 96.56 per cent of total caseload – with 68,817 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.
 

Now the third-most-affected country by active cases and deaths, second by total cases, and first by recoveries, India has added 395,604 cases in the past 7 days.

India now accounts for 5.67% of all active cases globally (one in every 17 active cases), and 10.02% of all deaths (one in every 10 deaths).

India has so far administered 294,639,511 vaccine doses. That is 981.19 per cent of its total caseload, and 21.14 per cent of its population.

Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (33340554), Uttar Pradesh (32039007), Gujarat (26981876), Rajasthan (26861654), and West Bengal (23760884).

Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (426793), Gujarat (422434), Delhi (412674), Uttarakhand (388021), and J&K (345603).

Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 15 days.

The count of active cases across India on Wednesday saw a net reduction of 19,327, compared with 40,366 on Tuesday. States and UTs hat have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Kerala (746), Assam (350), Mizoram (197), Meghalaya (77), and Arunachal Pradesh (9).

With 68,817 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 96.56%, while fatality rate remained unchanged at 1.30%.

The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.68%), Uttarakhand (2.08%), and Maharashtra (1.98%). The rate in as many as 18 is higher than the national average.

India’s new daily closed cases stand at 70,175 — 1,358 deaths and 68,817 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.9%.

India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.2%.

India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 409 days, and for deaths at 199.1 days.

Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (12617), Maharashtra (8470), Tamil Nadu (6895), Andhra Pradesh (4169), and Karnataka (3709).

Among states with more than 100,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Karnataka (94.57%), Maharashtra (95.90%), and Kerala (96.00%).

India on Tuesday conducted 1,901,056 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 395,973,198. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.7%.

Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Goa (18.42%), Maharashtra (15.01%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (14.53%), Kerala (12.77%), and Sikkim (12.05%).

Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are, Sikkim (12.05%), Manipur (12%), Kerala (10.72%), Meghalaya (10.07%), and Mizoram (9.56%).

Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (1116666), J&K (704171), Kerala (620652), Karnataka (488706), and Uttarakhand (474513).

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5987521), Kerala (2829460), Karnataka (2815029), Tamil Nadu (2436819), and Andhra Pradesh (1857352).

Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 8470 new cases to take its tally to 5987521.

Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 12617 cases to take its tally to 2829460.

Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 3709 cases to take its tally to 2815029.

Tamil Nadu has added 6895 cases to take its tally to 2436819.

Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 4169 to 1857352.

Uttar Pradesh has added 202 cases to take its tally to 1704678.

Delhi has added 397cases to take its tally to 1432778.
