Infrastructure projects in India are likely to get a boost with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) setting up a new state-of-the-art National Geo-technical Facility (NGF) here with a cost of Rs 15 crore.

After Norway, this will be the world’s second facility where both the government agencies and private companies from home and abroad can get their various tests done related to big projects like drilling, hydel projects, tunnels, bridges, expressways and highways. The new facility will be open to both the government and private sector companies.

Experts said the new facility will be highly beneficial to hydel projects that are coming up in big number in the highly fragile Himalayan region as the whole belt is prone to earthquakes.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg will inaugurate the new facility during the forthcoming visit early next year to India.
