The food grains output in the state is projected at about 10.06 million tonne in 2014-15 according to the crop-wise first advance estimates of kharif production.
The first advance estimate report, submitted to the Centre, contains the area, production and yield of various principal crops for the current fiscal.
The food grain output projection is based on cultivation in 5.071 million hectare (mha) of land with a yield of 1,983 kilogram per hectare. The estimates include 9.474 mt of cereals production with productivity of 2,305 kg per hectare covering 4.11 mha of land and pulses output of 0.582 mt with productivity of 1,983 kg per hectare covering 0.96 mha of land.

The production of paddy, a key kharif crop, is pegged at 8.46 mt with a yield of 2,350 kg per hectare. Similarly, maize and ragi production is estimated at 0.83 mt and 0.162 mt respectively for the ongoing kharif season. The projected pulses output include 0.19 mt of arhar, 0.15 mt of mung, 0.175 mt of biri. The oil seeds production is targeted at 0.31 mt with a yield of 0.69 kg per hectare and the fiber production is estimated at 0.577 million bales.
During 2014-15, it is programmed to provide crop loans to the tune of Rs 4,200 crore to the farmers through the cooperative sector. Even if the kharif sowing in June started on a slower note due to deficit rainfall, it picked up from July, which witnessed excess shower. As on September 12, kharif crop cultivation has been undertaken in 5.86 mha, which is slightly lower than 5.87 mha recorded a year ago. Cereals have been sown in 4.095 mha of land compared to 4.11 mha covered during the same period last year. Pulses have been sown in 0.647 mha, oil seeds in 0.224 mha, fibres in 0.15 mha, vegetables in 0.641 mha and spices in 0.101 mha.
