The parents of the 26-year-old U.S. aid worker, Peter Kassig, who was the fifth western hostage to be beheaded by the Islamic State (IS), have said that they will forgive their son's killers in time.

Kassig's father, Ed, said that their hearts are battered by the incident. He requested people to give the family some time and privacy to "mourn, cry and forgive," reported The Daily Star.

The former American soldier, who converted to Islam and changed his name to Abdul-Rhaman Kassig, was captured by the IS in October 2013.

The beheading video, showing a masked man standing over a severed head, was released by the terror group on Saturday.
