National level expo held to promote handloom sector in Assam

Guwahati recently hosted a 10-day long 'National Handloom Expo' at Chandmari playground under the aegis of Handloom development Commission, Government of India.

Weavers and artisans from across the Assam participated at the fair and showcase handmade products.

Various ethnic and tribal handloom products of Bodo, Karbi, Assamese, Mishing, Rabha, Tiwa were displayed in the fair.

"I have brought here different handmade products like gamocha, handkerchiefs, mekhla chadar. We are selling different products in this mela and we are selling quite well. It's very good we are getting a good response," said Kanika Das, a participant.

Be it bags, shawls or mekhlas, the products showcased unique designs, rich colors and traditions of the region.

 

The work of the local artisans was much appreciated by the visitors.

The government has been making all possible efforts to promote the artisans and their products.

"It is very good according to level, they maintain very well in such standard. It encourages our local industry and artisan because people from city get to know about their products so they also get a good scope by displaying their products," said Geeteka Kalita, a customer.

The northeastern region is famous for its exquisite and colorful hand woven clothes and craftwork.

And, exhibitions like this one enable the draftspersons to directly reach the customers.
