ANI Thane (Maharashtra)

A major fire that had broken out yesterday at Agarwadi dumping ground in Kalyan has left the nearby areas engulfed in thick smog, as the smoke continues to billow out of the four-acre dumping ground.

Even after the fire department pressed 14 fire tenders and 12 water tankers to rein in the inferno, it continues to simmer.

According to reports, the fire broke out around 3.30 p.m. after which the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) called for assistance from municipal corporations from Bhiwandi, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar to battle the raging flames.

Reports also state that possible generation of inflammable methane gas from the dumped garbage could be the cause behind the fire.

In March, a similar fire had broken our in Mumbai's Deonar dumping ground, which took days to be doused.
