The union cabinet Thursday approved the establishment of 85 trauma care centres in government hospitals on national and state highways preferably in accident prone areas.

The approval was given by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) at a meeting held here, an official release said.

The trauma care scheme was extended by the CCEA during the remaining period of the 12th Plan at a total expenditure of Rs.8.9 billion.

The availability of these dedicated trauma centres with specialised and skilled manpower will help in reducing incidence of deaths and disabilities due to road accidents, the release said.

These 85 trauma centres would be implemented with an estimated cost of Rs. 5.3 billion on cost sharing basis between the centre and states.
