Major General Johann Luif became the new commander of the European Union Force, or EUFOR, during a ceremony in Camp Butmir near Sarajevo here Wednesday.

Major General Dieter Heidecker completed his two-year tenure as EUFOR commander. The Operation Commander General Adrian Bradshaw handed over the command to General Luif, according to Xinhua.

During his speech at the ceremony, General Luif said EUFOR will continue its mission of the capacity building and training of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) as well as supporting local authorities in maintaining peace.

The ceremony was attended by BiH Minister of Defence Zekerijah Osmic as well as representatives of the EU and other international organisations.

EUFOR, first deployed in 2004 under the UN Security Council Resolution 1575 with some 7,000 troops, now makes up of some 600 soldiers.
