The British pound surged against the US dollar and the euro on Monday in the London market after polls published over the weekend suggested Britain remaining in the European Union in the referendum to be held on Thursday.

The pound rose on Monday to 1.94 per cent against the dollar, to reach $1.46 and 1.52 per cent against the euro to stand at 1.29 euro, Efe news reported.

According to a poll for weekly newspaper The Mail On Sunday, support for Britain staying in the EU went up three points, with 45 per cent, compared to 42 per cent support for Brexit.

A telephone survey for the Scottish newspaper The Herald, showed that 46 per cent of voters support the Remain campaign, compared to 43 per cent who advocate exit from the bloc.

Sterling dropped last week after several days of opinion polls were leaning towards Brexit.
