US stocks ended higher on Monday, with three indices all closing at record highs, as US lawmakers reached a bill that would resume government shutdown.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 142.88 points, or 0.55 per cent, to 26,214.60. The S&P 500 gained 22.67 points, or 0.81 per cent, to 2,832.97, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 71.65 points, or 0.98 per cent, to 7,408.03.

The US government shut down on Saturday after a spending bill that would fund the government through February 16 was voted against in the Senate.

Members of the senate reached a short-term compromise on Monday to keep the government open through February 8.

Stocks kicked off the session trading lower, but quickly erased those losses. Analysts said that historically, a brief bout of volatility had hit the market following a government shutdown, but the impact was often short-lived.

Investors also kept an eye on the corporate earnings reports.
