Education minister Kapil Sibal is correct when he says future Nobel laureates are expected to be working, not striking. Before the IIT professors decide to strike work and compare their salaries with those in top universities overseas, they must look at their relative work load. The average teacher in most top foreign universities works much longer hours than they do at the IITs. In any case, the government cannot increase the salaries of IIT professors in isolation — salaries have to go up across the board in all educational institutions. This, in turn, would mean a massive hike in fee structures and so on.
