CBI constable convicted of graft, given 5-year RI

A special court in Lucknow has sentenced a constable, then posted with CBI, and an advocate to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a nine-year-old corruption case.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 each on Sanjay Kumar Singh, who was on deputation from Punjab Police as a constable, and advocate S C Agnihotri.

CBI registered the case in 2004 and nabbed them while they were allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 at the residence of Agnihotri, who was then practicing as a lawyer, in Lucknow.

"It was alleged that an amount of Rs one lakh was to be paid in two installments of Rs 50,000 each to Sanjay Kumar Singh and S C Agnihotri for excluding the name of complainant from the charge sheet of case which was being investigated by CBI," the agency spokesperson said in a statement.
 

"After completing the investigation, charge sheet was filed in the court of special judge, Anti Corruption UP (West), Lucknow on August 5, 2005," the statement said.
