The district administration today extended by five years a law that deals with transfer of immovable properties in "disturbed areas".
A notification extending the Disturbed Areas Act in Vadodara till September 30, 2019 was issued by Collector Vinod Rao.
"This follows the expiry of the Act in Vadodara on September 30, 2014," he told PTI.
The Act seeks to check illegal transfer of properties in the communally sensitive areas officially described as "disturbed areas" in Ahmedabad and Vadodara cities. The Bill that paved the way for the legislation was passed by Gujarat Assembly in 2009.
The Act makes it tough to sell property to a member of the minority community in a neighbourhood.
The Act vests the District Collector with sweeping powers to ensure effective implementation of the "Gujarat Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Act, 1991".
The legislation empowers the Collector to hold inquiry suo motu or on an application from any person in cases where the possession of immovable property is in contravention of the Act.
The Act provides for penalty for contravention of it provisions and makes the offence cognisable.
