As the farm gate price of Bengal gram is likely to hover around Rs 4500-4700 per quintal during February-March, farmers have been advised by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here to take up its sowing.
Bengal gram is a major rabi pulse grown in the country and sowing will be taken up in October-November with the harvest slated in January-February, TNAU's Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre said in its analysis.
At present, Bengal gram is sold at Rs.5,000 to Rs.5,500 per quintal.

In Tamil Nadu, it was cultivated in 8,908 hectares with production of 5,823 tonnes during 2013-14. Nearly 75 per cent of the area was occupied by Desi (black) gram and the remaining under Kabuli (white).
As the last season stock is entering the market and supply from stock will continue till December end, the expected arrivals from other major producing countries during November- December followed by local arrivals during February-March will keep the prices firm, it said.
